Mayer Hawthorne & The County will set sail on a WORLD TOUR in celebration of this year's release, HOW DO YOU DO.
"Hawthorne emerges with a jaw-dropping collection of classic soul," RollingStone.com proclaimed upon hearing A Strange Arrangement, but with this latest release, the formula has been updated. The vocals are stronger, the music more varied and vibrant, but it's still Mayer Hawthorne. And the message is love.
Hawthorne has produced and played instruments for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. What he became, however, was a new school soul sensation, touring globally and earning accolades from Playboy, NPR and Entertainment Weekly. "He's an able singer...an arranger of astonishing precision," wrote the New York Times when Hawthorne first hit the scene.
On How Do You Do, his first major label effort for Universal Republic Records, Hawthorne proves that he is not part of a trend. The classic Motown sound that provided the blueprint for his self-produced independent debut, A Strange Arrangement, remains, but is joined on How Do You Do by music reminiscent of late 1960s California pop and the best work from the likes of Steely Dan and Chicago. Hawthorne says, "I found my own unique sound on this album, which I'm excited about." The album has a vintage sound, which involves twelve '70s inspired tracks, filled with orchestral pop and funky bass lines -- "I've taken what I can from the classic heroes of soul and updated it with the music I grew up listening to and loving like Public Enemy and Juan Atkins and Cybotron." Despite Hawthorne's jazz sound, he first found his musical voice in hip-hop and rap from his father, who plays in a band in Detroit, MI.
On "The Walk," the first single from How Do You Do, Hawthorne plays a man scorned and content with saying "So long, you did me wrong" to the lady in his life. "A Long Time" is both a brilliant homage to Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen" and a storied history of Hawthorne's beloved Detroit, followed by a duet yes, duet with the incomparable Snoop Dogg on "Cant Stop." "It's Snoop like you've never heard him before," Hawthorne told Billboard.com before the two performed together at the South by Southwest music festival in March.
The rest of How Do You Do is a trip through generations and tales of love cherished and love lost. Songs like "Hooked", "You Called Me" and "You're Not Ready" are vintage fare, while "The News" and "No Strings" add a modern, 21st century flair to the proceedings.
It was soul music from which he came, and those roots will never be left behind. But there is more to this artist than just soul music. "A lot of my other influences are coming out on this record," Hawthorne told Billboard.com. "There are a lot of other genres that are blending in now. "It's just turning into me."
And for those willing to believe anything is possible, be grateful to have Mayer Hawthorne on the scene. It's not just throwback music anymore this revival is all about progression.

It began as a party, grew into a band, evolved into a sound, and emerged as an institution. Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band (aka the Booty Band) has gone through many changes since their fated onset in 2002. Today they are ready to shake the world, one cheek at a time.
The bands first official studio release, Now You Know, debuted in 2007 to critical acclaim. The Booty Band received Home Grown Music Networks Album of the Year and Band of the Year awards, as well as the #3 best regional album from WNCW, one of the top Triple A stations in the country. Awe-inspiring live shows, powerful original compositions, and crowd-pleasing presentations have helped the Booty Band build a solid nationwide fanbase. Having completed three national tours in 2010 alone, the band has worked hard and done well to keep this fanbase fired up and growing fast. They have secured headlining slots at many prestigious festivals including Wakarusa, Jam Cruise, Bear Creek, Jazz Aspen, Long Beach Funk Fest, Rock Boat, Bele Chere (six consecutive years), Floyd Fest, and Smile Fest.
The Booty Band's second studio album, Doin It Hard, is a reflection of their approach to music, touring, performing, recording, and life in general. Recorded in June 2010 at the City of Progress Studios in Miami, FL under the cultivated ear of DJ Le Spam (Andrew Yeomanson), Doin It Hard is Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band - next-generation, redefined for a new decade. Doin It Hard will hit the streets on March 27, 2012 release and will be available on 12 vinyl, compact disc, and digital download.

Beats Antique - Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electonica and world roots music comes a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance, built of brass bands and glitch, string quartets and dubstep: the musical trio Beats Antique. Since the groups inception from the eclectic underground of San Franciscos performance art scene, Beats Antique has been notorious for making it nearly impossible to sit still. They meld their mediums as attentively as they fuse the cultures that inspire their sound. All self produced and composed, the trio creates a unique collage: an animalistic, raw musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic, while still maintaining an allegiance to the muses of class and beauty.
The journey that led to Beats Antique today was a winding and twisted path from the west coast to the ancient trade routes of the silk road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes. David Satori and Tommy Cappel both trained classically before venturing to locations such as Bali, West Africa, Serbia and beyond. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation, born from Hip Hop and old school jazz. Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the multi cultural and disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antiques sound. Jakes has worked with 2 major dance troupes, Miles Copelands Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brices Indigo Belly Dance Company, a student of ballet and contemporary techniques. Jakes additional history with Cappel in the Extra Action Marching Band and the Yard Dogs Road Show grants some insight into the caliber of performance that is Beats Antiques standard.
All of this sets the scene for Beats Antiques overtly ambitious stage show, a sensory overload conquest of the festival circuits most riotous events, such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits festival, and Outside Lands, as well as a catalog of proper tours that include Bassnectar and a recent run with Les Claypool of PRIMUS in early 2010. According to Satori, the trio is excited by their ability to create a huge sound from their relatively small setup. It gives us this whole new world of musical opportunities that were just starting to scratch the surface of. In a prolific 3 years since Beats Antique emerged, the group has released 2 albums and a pair of EPs, with a third album, Blind Threshold, on the way. Notable features of the new release include vaporous violins and Danny Elfman-esque dementia; glitchy, laser-guided harmonica provided by Blues Traveler frontman John Popper; and 2 very different vocal tracks that range between restless pop hooks and vibrant Eastern European dance loops. All wrapped into an intricate collection of heavy beats and sub bass.
Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the worlds music chasing its tail. However vivid that image, when a marching band groove crashes into bluesy folk chords only to be accompanied by electronic beats and Middle Eastern melodies, youll still be surprised.

Steve Earle released I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive in 2011 via New West Records and was rewarded with his highest UK chart position to date, No. 28. The album is the follow up to the Grammy Award winning 2009 release Townes. The new 11-track set was produced by T Bone Burnett and is Earle's first collection of original material since his 2007 Grammy Award winning, Washington Square Serenade. Writing for I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive began three years ago, the longest span of any song cycle in Steve Earle's career. The first two compositions were "God Is God" and "I Am A Wanderer", two songs written by Earle for Joan Baez' 2008 album, Day After Tomorrow (which Earle also produced). The album also includes the celebrated song "This City", written for the HBO Original Series, Treme, in which Earle also appears as an actor.
This year, Earle will be reprising his role of Harley during many episodes of Treme's second season. "This City" features horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint and has garnered a Grammy Award Nomination in the Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media Category. Additionally, the song also garnered Earle's first Emmy Award nomination in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics Category. I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive also features Heaven or Hell", a duet with Earle's wife, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Allison Moorer.
A protege of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Earle is a master storyteller in his own right, with his songs being recorded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, The Pretenders, Joan Baez and countless others. 1986 saw the release of his debut record, Guitar Town, which shot to number one of the country charts and immediately established the term "New Country". What followed was an extremely exciting and varied array of releases including the biting hard rock of Copperhead Road (1988), the minimalist beauty of Train A Comin (1995), the politically charged masterpiece, Jerusalem (2002) and the Grammy Award Winning albums The Revolution StartsNow (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007) and Townes (2009). I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive is Steve Earle's 14th Studio Album and shares the same name with his 2011 debut novel. Of the novel, Patti Smith stated, "Steve Earle brings to his prose the same authenticity, poetic spirit and cinematic energy he projects in his music. I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive is like a dream you can't shake, offering beauty and remorse, redemption in spades." Earle also produced the Grammy nominated album, Day After Tomorrow, by the legendary Joan Baez in 2008.

This grand concert includes many styles of all-original music, from folk to rock-n-roll to hip hop! The Music Experience concert is also the host of the PFO songwriting competition. Playing for Others (PFO) is a non-profit organization of 60 teens who are involved in the arts, be it theatre, music or visual arts. Each year PFO partners with another non-profit in Charlotte that directly impacts children with disabilities. This year they have partnered with HOPE (Helping Outcomes of Parents of Exceptional children). Through a "buddy program", committee work and intensive arts experience, teens learn the power of passion, the importance of civic responsibility and the acceptance of others.

On April 10 Thirty Tigers/RED will release Trampled by Turtles highly anticipated album Stars and Satellites. The bands 2010 release Palomino (Thirty Tigers) garnered critical acclaim from NPR Music who praised both the bands impeccable dexterity and charm and melody to the songs. AOL Spinner called the record hard-charging musicinfectiously raucous, while Paste Magazine admired the bands punk ethos as well as virtuosity and energy while naming the band as one of the Top 25 Live Acts of 2011. The band will support the new album with a North American tour this spring. Since forming in Duluth, Minnesota in 2003, Trampled by Turtles always felt they were able to attain an energy on stage that cant be found in the studio. They were so comfortable playing on the road that they treated their previous albums recording processes like tours. For Stars and Satellites, however, Trampled by Turtles didnt want to simply try to recreate a live show. We wanted to make a record that breathes, explains Dave Simonett (guitar/vocals), musically we wanted to step out of our comfort zone. This record is all about going inward, Erik Berry (mandolin, vocals) adds, building a focused bond as players and friends, and bringing a different mindset to the sounds Trampled by Turtles can make. With the help of engineer Tom Herbers (Low, Jayhawks) the band moved into Soleil Pines, a log home outside of Duluth, to record. You know how sometimes they say less is more, notes Berry, thats what Stars and Satellites is about. Trampled by Turtles is Dave Simonett, Tim Saxhaug (bass, vocals), Dave Carroll (banjo, vocals), Erik Berry and Ryan Young (fiddle). Within the contained music scene of Duluth, the members of the band did their own time in punk and rock bands, brandishing their electricity proudly before switching to acoustic instruments. While they never set out to be a bluegrass band, Trampled by Turtles employs many of the same traditional techniques of the genre, but their differences in influences, attitude and attack make for their unique sound.

JUNIOR BROWN

There's usually a wide-eyed look accompanying one who witnesses Junior's unique instrumental prowess for the first time... or the second, or third, for that matter. Junior invented his own guitar, one that combines the standard 6-string guitar and the steel guitar. He calls it the "guit-steel."

I was playing both the steel and guitar, switching back and forth a lot while I sang, and it was kind of awkward. But then I had this dream where they just kind of melted together. When I woke up, I thought 'You know, that thing would work!' They made double-neck guitars and double-neck steels,so why not one of each?

A call was made to guitar maker Michael Stevens, whose expertise made the dream a reality, and around 1985 the guit-steel was born. Last year Junior once again enlisted the services of Stevens to make a second guit-steel, a cherry-red axe affectionately nicknamed "Big Red." In Junior's hands, the guit-steel is an amazing tool, a means to creating some of the hottest, most heartfelt playing heard in years (and in a town like Austin, that's saying something). His talents have led major magazines like Musician to herald Junior as a genius. Life magazine honored him as the only contemporary musician included in their "All Time Country Band," and Guitar Player magazine's 1994 "Best of..." listings made him their #1 lap steel player, #2 Country Artist, and #3 country album (Guit With It).

Formed only a little over a year ago, this exciting Los Angeles trio of songwriters and producers have already collaborated with N*E*R*D, toured with Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa, had a Mixtape produced and presented by DIPLO and BENZI entitled Paradise Falls, and produced the track PA Nights on Mac Millers new album Blue Slide Park.

After almost six years on the road, EOTO has morphed into a full-scale musical experience incorporating all of the senses in their live production. Its truly a sight to behold. With the addition of the 3D lotus stage design, EOTO can now capture an unabashed visual experience to accompany their groundbreaking live producing style.

Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of this project from drummers Michael Travis and Jason Hann. Born out of their shared love of electronic dance music, EOTOs M.O. is to take the free-wheeling party vibe of a DJ set to the next level by using organic instruments, innovative performance technology, and uncharted musical exploration. Live drums, guitars, and keys, and vocals are mixed, remixed, and sampled on the fly using cutting-edge programs. This is all done without a script, and without a net.

Bad Veins, New Cassettes & HRVRD open

We Were Promised Jetpacks are yet another hugely talented young Scottish band added to the FatCat roster. The 4-piece came to our attention when listening to some of the friends on the Frightened Rabbit Myspace page. Though recent months has seen the band tour the UK with their aforementioned friends, the four preceding years have consisted of local gigs in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh, allowing WWPJ to find their sound and hone their live performance.
Assembled in Edinburgh as high school friends in 2003, their first ever gig saw them winning their schools battle of the bands competition. Proceeding shows were after school performances around the city of Edinburgh which were well attended and fuelled the band with a hunger and ambition. If the nascent WWPJ aural template embraced light-footed compositions few effects pedals, traditional song structures, clear-cut guitars - succeeding years have seen WWPJ soar aural heights and mine emotional depths in every sense: the band you will encounter now are a cacophonous tour de force: louder, wilder, avidly literate; fiercely melodic, yet eagerly restrained. Lyrics and vocal melodies come courtesy of Adam Thompson, everything else arises from the full group; Adam Thompson (Guitar/Vocals), Michael Palmer (Guitar), Sean Smith (Bass) and Darren Lackie (Drums).

AXE One Night Only presents DIPLO & Chiddy Bang

DIPLO a Philadelphia-based producer and DJ since 2003. As a DJ, Diplo is characterized by his eclectic, often 80s-oriented mashups, mixtapes, and live sets. On his full-length solo effort Florida, however, his sound is closer to sample-based cinematic instrumental hip hop, not unlike the work of DJ Shadow. In addition to his solo career, he has worked with Sri-Lankan/Tamil singer and artist M.I.A.. The two were also romantically involved. Pentzs alias, short for Diplodocus, derives from his childhood fascination with dinosaurs.

Chiddy Bang is an alternative hip hop duo from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania consisting of Chidera Chiddy Anamege, and Noah Xaphoon Jones Beresin. The pair shot to international prominence in 2010 with the release of their major-label debut single Opposite of Adults which peaked within the Top 20 on various singles charts worldwide including the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Belgium.

"Real music is crash protected," state the liner notes of Black Radio, a future landmark album by the Robert Glasper Experiment that boldly stakes out new musical territory and transcends any notion of genre, drawing from jazz, hip-hop, R&B and rock, but refusing to be pinned down by any one tag. Like an aircraft's black box for which the album is titled, Black Radio holds the truth and is indestructible.

Robert Glasper has long kept one foot planted firmly in jazz and the other in hip-hop and R&B. He's worked extensively with Q-Tip, playing keyboards on the rapper's 2008 album The Renaissance and co-writing the album single "Life Is Better" which featured his label mate Norah Jones. Glasper also serves as the music director in Yasiin Bey's touring band, and has toured with the multi-platinum R&B singer Maxwell.

The Los Angeles Times once wrote that "it's a short list of jazz pianists who have the wherewithal to drop a J Dilla reference into a Thelonious Monk cover, but not many jazz pianists are Robert Glasper," adding that "he's equally comfortable in the worlds of hip-hop and jazz," and praising the organic way in which he "builds a bridge between his two musical touchstones."

Glasper drove that point home with his last album, 2009's Double-Booked, which was split neatly in half. The first part featured his acoustic Trio, which had gathered a great deal of acclaim in the jazz world and beyond over the course of two previous Blue Note albums (2005's Canvas and 2007's In My Element). The second part featured his electric Experiment band and hinted at things to come, even earning the keyboardist his first GRAMMY nomination for "All Matter," a collaboration with the singer Bilal that was among the contenders in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category in 2010.
With Black Radio, the Experiment band has fully arrived. Featuring Glasper on piano and Fender Rhodes, Casey Benjamin on vocoder and saxophone, Derrick Hodge on electric bass, and Chris Dave on drums, the band is plugged in and open source. Each of the band members is prodigiously talented and lives naturally in multiple musical worlds, distilling countless influences into a singular voice. "That's what makes this band unique," says Glasper. "We can go anywhere, literally anywhere, we want to go. We all have musical ADD and we love it."

ACOUSTIC SYNDICATE
Sons of Bill opens

Acoustic Syndicate is a rock/folk/bluegrass band from North Carolina formed in 1992. They have toured nationally in the US, including appearances at Farm Aid and the Bonnaroo festival. Their sound is characterized by three-part vocal harmony and complex polyrhythmic banjo playing. Lyrically, the group often discusses themes relating to subsistence, sustainability and quality of life.


Sons of Bill is a five-piece alt-country rock band from Charlottesville, Virginia featuring brothers James, Sam and Abe Wilson, as well as Seth Green and Todd Wellons. The band began pre-production work on their new album in the Spring of 2010. In December 2010 they entered Sound of Music Studios with David Lowery of 90's alt-rock band Cracker producing and John Morand engineering. In March 2011 the band initiated a fan-funded campaign through the innovative website Kickstarter to help offset recording and production costs. The campaign was a tremendous success, hitting it's $20,000 goal in just over 24 hours and eventually doubling that goal in the month it was active. The band continued working at Sound of Music, in addition to returning to PLYRZ Studios to work with producer and mixer Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty), and recording at Mission Sound Studios in Brooklyn, NY. BREAK SCIENCE - The Brooklyn based electronic duo, Break Science kick off 2012 with the release of their second EP entitled Monolith Code (Pretty Lights Music). As seasoned producers and touring veterans, Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee have produced and performed with everyone from The Fugees, Wu Tang Clan, and Talib Kweli, to reggae Lee Scratch Perry and Miles Davis collaborator, John Scofield. On Monolith Code, Break Science evokes a wide spectrum of electronic genres filtered through a musician's lens, all while moving people spiritually AND on the dance floor.
Adam Deitch describes the musical process behind the record. "We understand that to bring our vision to life, we have to spend just as much time on the programmed elements as we do on the live elements. Our goal is to blend these elements seamlessly, so everything comes together in an organic way. Our music is layered with different frequencies and sonic textures so it becomes something you can listen to multiple times and STILL hear new elements you might have missed the first time. We are influenced by everything from hip-hop and glitch, to jazz, soul, vinyl drum breaks and dub. We like certain elements of dubstep and drumstep (especially that BASS) and try to incorporate that sound in a fresh, new way." Break Science is poised to make their biggest mark yet onto the burgeoning livetronica scene. Joining forces with a movement of new electronic artists on the Pretty Lights Music label, this potent duo will continue to push the boundaries of modern music.

GRAMATIK has always been an early adopter. It began at the age of 3, when his mother would catch him glued to the radio in his older sisters room, checking out the cassette tapes with American funk, jazz, soul and blues. He started making his first beats on an early PC by the time he was 13, and soon the kid from Portoroz, Slovenia figured out how to harvest the power of free file sharing to build a following throughout the US & Europe. Tracks spread, hype grew, tours followed, and before long his digital persona forged the initial inroads into the US market, landing him both a label and an agency.
Gramatik landed on US soil as a fully formed artist who knows how to do things his way. He signed to a label, Pretty Lights Music, that gives all of its music away for free, which went hand in hand with his own philosophy about ''freeing music by making music free''. Soon after, he scooped up his hometown crew and moved to Brooklyn, NY. Alongside Gramatik, the multimedia collective known as Dream Big features guitarist and producer F.A.Q, video director and filmmaker Anze Koron and graphic and web designer Martin Kenjic, with whom he has been friends since they were kids, sitting in a small town on the Adriatic coast, dreaming of breaking out into the wide world beyond. PAUL BASIC - Over the last several years, Colorado producer Paul Basic (Paul Brandt) has developed his own brand of beats fusing dusty samples with hard hitting drums and razor-sharp basslines. His roots are in drumming, having played in a band with label-mates Michal Menert and Derek Vincent Smith through highschool before moving on to produce his own tracks. He draws from a slew of inspirations in order to create his own style within the PLM electro hip-hop movement. A Colorado native, Paul lived on both coasts while pursuing a degree in audio production, before he came back to CO to team up with his crew and begin his quest for domination of the global dance floor. Now available for free download is Paul Basic's debut on the PLM label with his EP 'The Mirror'.

One tempestuous weekend in March 1979 was not only the date of the Three Mile Island nuclear incident, but also, in Birmingham, England, the very first show by a nascent band known as The Beat. When the beat rushed on to the music scene in 1979, it was a time of social, political and musical upheaval. Into this storm came The Beat, trying to calm the waters with their simple message of love and unity set to a great dance beat. The Beat were all about inclusion, rather than exclusion, and this showed in their personnel and their music influences. The band crossed over fluidly between soul, reggae, pop and punk, and from these disparate pieces they created an infectious dance rhythm. The band retains their status as one of the most popular and influential bands of the British ska movement.

BUCKETHEAD - Although a multi-instrumentalist, Buckethead is best known for his electric guitar playing, and famed for his distinctive stage outfit and elaborate stage shows. He has been voted number 8 on a list in GuitarOne magazine of the Top 20 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time. He has released 32 solo albums and performed on over 50 more since 1992. He has also made guest appearances on more than 40 different albums by various artists. His music spans such diverse areas as progressive metal, thrash metal, funk, ambient, jazz, dub, and avant-garde music.

When performing in his theatrical persona, Buckethead used to wear a KFC bucket (emblazoned with an orange bumper sticker that read FUNERAL in black block letters) on his head and a plain white costume mask (commonly found in costume shops and used primarily for dramatic theater productions). More recently, he has switched to a plain white bucket no longer bearing the KFC logo. He also incorporates nunchaku, robot dancing, and toy trading into his stage performances. Bucketheads persona represents a character who was raised by chickens and has made it his mission in life to alert the world to the ongoing chicken holocaust in fast-food joints around the globe.


THAT 1 GUY - Like a one-man band plucked from the pages of Dr. Seuss, That 1 Guy delivers earthshaking future funk from the magic pipe to accompany his madcap lyrics about turbo snails, meat storms, and weasel pot pies.
Funky Bean, Buttmachine, Mustaches and Laser beams. It reads like a page out of a Dr. Seuss book, but for Mike Silverman, better known as That 1 Guy, it is just the reality he was searching for.
At 150-200 live shows each year people gather to see his mad scientist at work, curiously watching as That 1 Guy plugs an electric chord into the heel of a cowboy boot and transforms it into an instrument. He howls and the audience joins him like a pack of coyotes. They even chime in for the song Weasel Pot Pie, offering rhymes to finish a line about cinnamon scones: Twilight Zones? Al Capones? Frank Stallones? That 1 Guy laughs and offers the grin of a Cheshire cat. Here is a man who loves his job.
With his curious instrument, creative performances and abundant talent, That 1 Guy has been wowing crowds around the world at Big Day Out, Glastonbury, Monterrey Jazz Festival, Lowlands, Wakarusa and numerous other festivals. In 2007 he joined Guns N Roses guitarist Buckethead on an American tour before headlining his own Mustaches and Laser Beams tour through North America.

NEEDTOBREATHE - The Reckoning 2012 Tour @ OVENS AUDITORIUM

When NEEDTOBREATHEs Bear and Bo Rinehart set out to write the songs that appear on the bands new album, The Reckoning, they felt something bigger awaited them. It wasnt just commercial success either. The bands last album The Outsiders hit No. 9 on Billboards Rock Albums chart, went Top 20 on the Top 200, saw the band sell out venues such as Nashvilles Ryman Auditorium and Chicagos House of Blues, and score an impressive number of placements in blockbuster films and numerous prime time television-shows. Bear explains There was always this creeping reminder that we needed to show what the last ten years on the road had taught us. If we couldnt do that, everything we had worked for was meaningless. With their reputation as a must-see live act built from non-stop touring, the Rinehart brothers, pastors sons who hail from the rural South Carolina town of Possum Kingdom, along with drummer Joe Stillwell and bass player Seth Bolt, were determined to create a statement-making album that truly captured the magic behind this genuinely appealing rock band. We considered every note, every sound, and every lyric that went on this album, Bo says of their fourth album The Reckoning, which was co-produced by the band with Rick Beato (who worked with the band on their records The Heat and The Outsiders), and was recorded over seven months mostly at their Plantation Studios in Charleston, SC. Everything was put through the Do we really believe in this or not, filter. We never settled. We were looking for a spark. Sometimes in the studio youve got to keep searching until something happens that feels magical. We were waiting for that moment to strike on each song before we called this album finished. Bear adds, At one point, we had done 10 different versions of the same song, but that process is what the record came to be about. We felt like no one could take this moment from us. I think you can feel the pressure we put on ourselves in every note of this record. The songs and the album became something much bigger than us something we had to live up to.

NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS
Lightnin' Malcolm opens

The North Mississippi Allstars were founded in 1996; a product of a special time for modern Mississippi country blues. RL Burnside, Jr. Kimbrough, Otha Turner and their musical families were at their peak; making classic records and touring the world. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson soaked up the music of their father, Jim Dickinson, and absorbed the North Mississippi Blues legacy while playing and shaking it down at the juke joints with their blues ancestors. Luther (guitar and vocals) and Cody (drums and vocals) joined up with bassist Chris Chew to form the core of their own band, The North Mississippi Allstars. Through the filter of generations of Mississippi Blues men, the Allstars pioneered their own blues-infused rock and roll.
Luther and Cody Dickinson lost their father, Memphis music legend Jim Dickinson, only months before Luther became one. Jim had always told them, You need to be playing music together. You are better together than you will ever be apart. Coincidentally, the Dickinson brothers were not together when Jim passed. At that moment, they were both off on their own, Luther with The Black Crowes and Cody with the Hill Country Revue. So in the spring of 2010, the North Mississippi Allstars reformed and went into the Zebra Ranch, the familys recording studio where they had spent countless hours together with their dad, to create a record that could help them cope with the loss, and, at the same time, rejoice in his honor. The first line of Jims self-written eulogy was, I refuse to celebrate death. Luther, Cody and Chris Chew took heed and aimed to celebrate life instead; and the songs for the new record, Keys To The Kingdom (Songs of the South), came pouring out of their souls. As is our familys tradition, we gathered in our homemade studio and recorded, Luther says. We carried on as weve been taught and dealt the only way we know, by making musicKeys To The Kingdom is definitely our finest collaboration.
The North Mississippi Allstars have put a fresh face on blues-based rock for those too young to remember the works of Johnny Winter, Cream, Canned Heat, and the Allman Brothers. Their mix of fuzz-tone rock pyrotechnics--reminiscent of ZZ Top--with jazzy bass, Southern gospel, and juke-joint blues, has enabled the band to expand their mid-South cult following into an international fan-base. The most dynamic aspect of their sound is the eclectic guitar work of Luther Dickinson, who often incorporates Duane Allman-style country-rock licks with punkish vamps and percussive, bluesy improvisation into his solos. Younger brother Cody Dickinson drums with hard rock force and flair but is highly adaptable to the group's many shifts in mood and tempo. Holding it all together are the jazz-tinged bass lines of Chris Chew, whose backup vocals provide a soulful counterpoint to Luther's hissing hard-rock phrases. Although the roots-minded trio draws heavily from such old-time blues artists as Mississippi Fred McDowell, R.L. Burnside, and Junior Kimbrough, the Allstars bristle when others label them a blues act. "We don't claim to be a blues band at all," Luther Dickinson told Edward Angel Sotelo of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "We're a rock 'n' roll band."

CODY CANADA & The DEPARTED

In the wake of Cross Canadian Ragweeds decision to part ways, CODY CANADA resurfaced with an armament of musicians and a mission in mind. With his long time Ragweed band mate, JEREMY PLATO (bass) the two made a seamless transition into the world of The DEPARTED, as in CODY CANADA & The DEPARTED'. We kicked around several ideas for names, Canada said. Were all from different bands and we wanted something to sound like we came from different places. The Departed was right on the money. Along with Canada and Plato, The Departed rounds out with Seth James on guitar (Seth James Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard), Steve Littleton on B3 organ and keys (Live Oak Decline, Stoney LaRue & the Arsenals, Medicine Show) and Dave Bowen on drums (Stoney LaRue, Bleu Edmondson, Dale Watson). Because they have traveled in the same circles for years, the band members are all familiar with each other and familiar with each others style of playing. More than likely theyve all played on the same stage at one time or another already. Its this familiarity with each other that made their first project so uncomplicated. Although The Departed is writing and will record original material, the bands first priority was getting into the studio and cutting the Oklahoma tribute album that Cody has wanted to do for years.

This Is Indian Land is a 15-track deep buffet of really kick-ass Okie songs, Canada states. He jokingly says It might sound like originals because not many people have ever heard these songs. But in fact, the album is loaded with well-known selections like Kevin Welchs Kickin Back in Amsterdam and True Love Never Dies, JJ Cales If Youre Ever in Oklahoma and Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Leon Russells Home Sweet Oklahoma. Of course there were a few tracks picked for more personal reasons. Cody notes, The Ballad of Rosalie (Randy Pease) was the first song I ever heard in Stillwater. Little Rain Will Do (Greg Jacobs) is just an awesome historical song Ive been wanting to record since the first time I heard it. Randy Crouchs Face On Mars really kind of frightened us. A lot of people wanted us to do it but we didnt know what to do with it. We sat there for a whole day trying to get it arranged and find a groove for it. We made it happen and its one of my favorites on the album.

A NIGHT IN RIO: The Brazilian Carnival Experience

The Latin American Coalition invites you to our third annual Brazilian Celebration A NIGHT IN RIO a journey through Brazil in an evening featuring traditional dancing; live musical performances of Samba, Bossa Nova, and Brazilian Beats; authentic foods; and arts and crafts. You won't want to miss the contagious energy of Brazils famous Carnaval at this one-of-a-kind cultural experience.

The Carnival celebration will start with a free samba lessons to get the crowd moving. Demonstrations of capoeira, an Afro- Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music and dance, will be provided JustBrazil. There will be live samba and traditional dancing by Movimentos de Samba. DELBERT McCLINTON
Lightnin' Malcolm opens

Delbert McClinton proudly defies classifications. His music blends his Texas roots with roadhouse rock, juke-joint blues, Memphis soul and country. During his entire recording career, record labels have consistently tried to pigeonhole Delbert's music. But if you ask the critics about Delbert's dynamic vocals and harmonica style, you'll hear descriptions ranging from 'honky-tonk,' 'blue-eyed soul,' and 'Texas stomp' to 'country rock' and 'blues.' Delbert's music rebels against traditional categorization. Ask Delbert what kind of music he plays and he'll say, "Fun music."

McClinton was raised in Fort Worth, Texas, and cut his musical teeth playing in honky tonk bars in the '50s, sometimes jamming in back of a screen to protect him from flying beer bottles. His first taste of national success came in 1962, when he played harmonica on Bruce Chanel's classic song, "Hey! Baby." Soon he was touring and recording. His early days included meeting with a pre-fame John Lennon during a 1962 U.K. tour, during which McClinton showed Lennon a thing or two on the harmonica.
A succession of influential and critically acclaimed albums followed, along with coups like appearing on "Saturday Night Live" in its heyday -- an acknowledgement of the pages torn from Delbert's play book by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi when they formed The Blues Brothers. He scored hits like "Giving It Up For Your Love" and "Sandy Beaches," won a Grammy with Bonnie Raitt for their "Good Man/Good Woman" duet, and over the years has enjoyed covers of his songs by Emmylou Harris, The Blues Brothers, Vince Gill, Wynonna, Lee Roy Parnell, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, among others.

Shane Pruitt Band opens

Robert Cray, the Five-time Grammy award winner and 11-time nominee has been practicing his craft professionally for over 35 years. Known for his good-time, uptown, low-down blues, Cray has inspired critics to praise his soulful vocal and instrumental artistry, earned respect from his peers, and sent young guitarists running back to the woodshed. Robert finds inspiration outside of blues; he looks to Caribbean, salsa and reggae to keep his sound fresh. Tim Parsons of Blues Revue Magazine says Crays sound speaks eloquence, capturing the attention of listeners who lean closer when he makes his guitar whisper. The rhythm is engaging, the stories compelling. Its like being in a groovy conversation. In 2011, Robert was inducted into the Blues Foundations Hall of Fame, an honor he greatly deserved. Cray was recently featured on the cover of Blues Revue Magazine. With over 20 albums under his belt, Cray continues to entertain blues fans both young and old. The Band is made up of successful musicians in their own right. Drummer Tony Braunagel has worked all over the world doing many things including producing and co-producing records for the likes of Eric Burdon and Curtis Salgado and acting on the sitcom, According to Jim. Braunagel joined The Robert Cray Band in 2009. At age 19, keyboard player Jim Pugh started playing Soul Jazz and BBQ Blues at Dottie Ivorys Stardust Lounge in San Francisco. Pugh has performed with Johnny Taylor, Little Milton and Otis Rush and recorded with Etta James, Van Morrison, and B.B. King. Jim has been a member of The Robert Cray Band since 1989. Bassist Richard Cousins has played bass for many people including Etta James, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King. He started playing with Robert Cray in 1974 and played in the band until 1991. Cousins returned to the band in 2009.

Marc Broussard was seemingly destined for a life as a music man. As the son of Boogie Kings guitarist (and Louisiana Hall of Fame member) Ted Broussard, his upbringing in Lafayette, La., instilled in him an affinity for R&B alongside the Cajun trappings of southern Louisiana. He draws vocal and stylistic influence from Otis Redding and Brian McKnight while bearing the preternaturally gruff voice of John Hiatt or Dr. John.

It seems that every Celtic band is on tour in North America during the six to eight weeks that lead up to St. Patricks Day. Celtic albums tend to reflect this schedule as well, so its a rare and welcome event that on August 3, 2010 Gaelic Storm released Cabbage, its seventh studio album and fourth on their own label Lost Again Records. Its nicely out of sync with the norm, but when you are a band that spends over 200 days a year on the road, its a near miracle that you find time to write, record and release an album at all. Following the path of the bands 2008 release, Whats The Rumpus?, Cabbage debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Chart, additionally peaking at #14 on the iTunes overall Album Chart and #11 on the Billboard Independent Album Chart.
After a start playing monthly gigs for friends at Santa Monicas OBriens Tavern in 1995, the bands popularity skyrocketed when it appeared in James Camerons Titanic as the Celtic party band in the ships steerage. Unlike so many other bands that were unable to sustain a career after receiving near-blinding initial exposure, Gaelic Storm has amassed a large, loyal and ever-growing following. After three studio albums on Virgin/EMI early on, the band has since flourished in an extreme DIY fashion by not only launching their own label, Lost Again Records, and releasing their albums themselves but also by designing all their own album art, posters and advertisements, and spearheading all their own merchandising, book-keeping and marketing. Gaelic Storm is a truly self-contained entity; an indie model for the new music industry that knows its identity and audience, and stays in close contact with its fans.
While Gaelic Storm plays Celtic music that hearkens back to the traditional music of Ireland, they are hardly traditionalists, adding modern sounds and drawing influences from American rock and pop as well as music styles from around the world. This is a band with its feet firmly planted in the present, appearing on two EA Sports Games and their song Kiss Me Im Irish has been used in a Hallmark greeting card in 2008. The band has made countless television and radio appearances, and there are official videos and heaps of fan-posted live YouTube clips (often with the crowd singing as loud as the band).

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area and currently residing in Los Angeles, MiM0SA began producing at the tender age of 17. Blessed with an abundance of talent and an ear for sonic experimentation, this fan-favorit...e has quickly developed a name for himself as one of the West Coasts top exports. And the word is spreading fast. In just a few short years hes shared the stage with standard-bearers like Benga, Skream, Rusko, Datsik, Glitch Mob, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar and Flying Lotus. Hes also played festivals and shows across North America, including Coachella, Symbiosis Gathering, Burning Man, Decibel Festival, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre. To say that MiM0SA is on the rise is to miss the mark. Rather, MiM0SA has arrived. This past March found him headlining his first tour, as he criss-crossed the U.S., selling out major venues like Higher Ground (Burlington, VT), the Paradise (Boston, MA), and the Gothic Theater (Denver, CO). Not to mention stellar debut performances at legendary venues such as NYCs Irving Plaza and The Fillmore in San Francisco. The words tireless and prolific dont quite do MiM0SA justice. In one weekend he headlined Lightning in a Bottle, blasted over to Summer Camp, and finished off the weekend with a blistering performance Detroit Movement Fest. Ever ambitious and constantly in search of new avenues to explore, MiM0SA recently formed his own record label: False Idol Musik. Thus far, the results have been staggering. The tracks on 58 Degrees are rare and beautiful, full spectrum sonic brushstrokes hovering in the ether. MiM0SA says, Music is a healing process, you can find a resolution to your problems through melody. One listen to 58 Degrees will make you a believer.

DUENDE MOUNTAIN DUO - Live EDM, Electro, Dubstep, DnB
The Duende Mountain Duo started in late 2007 as a completely live, improvised electronic act. Now combining live instrumentation alongside computer-based production and DJ-inspired transitions, a new live show experience is formed where production meets performance. Made up of keyboardist and producer Will Little and human drum-machine, Will Stone, Duende has spent the last 4 years shaping its sound by pulling inspiration from all subgenres of EDM. The end result is a truly original sound with early roots inspired by French Electro House and UK Drum N Bass blended with current deeper and darker genres such as Dubstep, Glitch and Grime. The term Duende has many different definitions, the simplest being "the ability to attract others through personal magnetism and charm." In Spanish Art the term is used to describe the magic of improvisation and spontaneous creation: "a sort of corkscrew that can get art into the sensibility of an audience..." In 2011 the Duende Mountain Duo played over 50 shows including playing at the Fillmore in Charlotte for Bass Church 19, the Getdown Music Festival, The Blind Tiger in Greensboro, and a two day run with That 1 Guy at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh and the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte. Duende has shared the stage with acts such as Conspirator, That 1 Guy, The Mantras, Psychedelphia, Ultraviolet Hippopotamus and many other regional NC Bands.

SARAH JAROSZ
Ian Thomas opens

The best and brightest in the acoustic world move the music forward with an awareness of what came before them; that is certainly true of Sarah Jarosz. On her second album for Sugar Hill Records, Follow Me Down, she pays homage to her musical roots while pushing beyond those sometimes limited boundaries, taking us on a journey both dark and mystical. For this, Jarosz has a simple yet telling explanation: "I'm influenced by the older, and the contemporary, and the new." Her approach to acoustic music is invigorating; she gives equal attention to playing, singing, and writing, choosing songs that embrace both old timey and modern sounds. Jarosz's new albumdue out six days before her twentieth birthdaytakes up where her acclaimed debut, Song Up In Her Head, left off, but also expands her palette significantly. "I definitely could have just made a record that was similar to the last onepretty rootsy," she reflects. "That would have been a representation of a side of me. But I have all these new sounds and ideas and I just didn't want to hold back on this one." The Wimberley, Texas native went looking for those ideasshe didn't sit back and wait for them to come to her. Instead of going straight to work as a full-time musician, as many before her have done, she left her hometown30 miles outside of Austinand headed to Boston's New England Conservatory to study contemporary improvisation on the NEC Presidential Merit scholarship. "I wanted something to push me out of my comfort zone," Jarosz says. "I wanted to be playing things that I might not normally play." And she has had plenty of opportunities to do just that, from playing and singing with Jewish and world music ensembles at school to sitting in on wildly unpredictable live jams with the Punch Brothers and Mumford & Sons. Jarosz makes the most out of her immersion in new flavors. "It's all so fun and exciting," she shares. "That's not to say that I'm going to become a world music musician. But being exposed to all of that and learning it and absorbing it, it becomes part of your musical language and something that you can use in your own way to make what you do more unique." That keen, open-minded attitude speaks volumes about her maturity. In the two years since Jarosz's first album came out, the wider world has discovered what plenty of old-time and bluegrass luminaries and festival-going fans already knewthat she is a formidable talent. There have been GRAMMY and Americana Music Award nominations, a trio of Austin Music Awards, invitations to perform on "Austin City Limits" and "A Prairie Home Companion" and at Bonnaroo, Newport and Telluride. For Jarosz, all this has meant lugging around four instrument casesone holding her mandolin, another her octave mandolin and the final two her clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitarwhile keeping up with her tonal harmony and American lit classes.

Blue Dogs were formed in Charleston, SC, in 1987 by lead singer/guitarist Bobby Houck and bassist Hank Futch, who had known each other since childhood and played together in college. Drummer Greg Walker came along later, joining the band in 1993. At first, the Blue Dogs were acoustic-oriented and played a lot of bluegrass and country covers. But in the early '90s, they went electric and shifted their focus to roots rock, country-rock, and Southern rock; the artists who have influenced the electric version of the Blue Dogs range from the Wallflowers and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers to Little Feat and John Cougar Mellencamp.


The Raleigh, North Carolina-based band, The Connells, play a guitar-oriented, power pop style of rock music, with introspective lyrics that reflect the American South. Guitarist Mike Connell formed the band in 1984, along with his brother David Connell on bass, Doug MacMillan on vocals, former Johnny Quest drummer Peele Wimberley on drums; and later added keyboardist Steve Potak to their lineup. From the beginning of the group, Mike Connell wrote both the music and the lyrics of the majority of the bands songs, although he was not the bands primary lead singer. Connells influences included the 1960s guitar pop of his childhood, including The Byrds and The Beatles; in an early interview, he stated that the first song he wrote as a teenager was titled Psychedelic Butterfly.

Shana Blake and Pivotal Soul Trio open

Comedy legend Gallagher live at Neighborhood Theatre! He is known for smashing watermelons, Jell-o, and sundry other items with a sledgehammer he has dubbed his "Sledge-o-matic". His popularity is largely based on live appearances on a number of television specials, where those in the front rows of the audience must protect themselves from flying produce with plastic sheeting.

Being one of the most thoroughly calculating performers in the world of entertainment, he writes all of his own material, runs his own operation, and does over 100 concerts a year, selling out the majority of them. A Gallagher concert is an unforgettable experience. He is a keen and original observer of human nature and the American scene. "My humor makes people think," Gallagher says. "I want people to look more closely at this country and their lives to see the humor and absurdity in it all I don't have to make it up, the truth is funny enough."

CHATHAM COUNTY LINE
Electric Holiday Tour

The night will start with a short set by Massachusetts' folk-rocker Johnny Irion. After Johnny, Chatham County Line will take the stage for a full acoustic set in their traditional single mic formation. After a short break in which the chairs will be removed from the dance floor area, CCL will "plug in" and perform an electric set with friends Zeke Hutchins on drums and Jay Brown on Bass. In the electric set, Greg Readling will move to Pedal Steel and Piano; Dave, John, and Chandler will rotate between fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and acoustic and electric guitars; and Johnny Irion will join the fray on piano and electric guitar. SARAH LEE GUTHRIE & JOHNNY IRION
Amanda Jo Williams and Lowry & Fedor Duo opens

A lot can happen in five years, and for the husband-and-wife duo Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, the time between Exploration, their first album together in 2005, and Bright Examples (Ninth Street Opus Records, Feb. 22, 2011), their new, full-length collaborative project featuring producers Andy Cabic (lead singer/songwriter in the band Vetiver) and Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver), has been one nonstop whirlwind of activity. Not only has the couple toured extensively both as a duo and as part of the Guthrie Family Rides Again tour (with Sarah Lees dad, Arlo Guthrie), theyve also released the childrens album Go Waggaloo (Smithsonian Folkways), a live DVD entitled Folk Song, a solo album by Johnny (Ex Tempore), parented their two young daughters and moved from South Carolina to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts, near where Sarah Lee was raised.

Bright Examples finds Guthrie and Irion taking their patented country-rock sound and tilting it in a direction Guthrie describes as more atmospheric or psychedelic, sort of dreamy but colorful. Recorded at Dreamland Studios near Woodstock, N.Y., the album features a dozen original compositions, chosen from more than 50 theyd accumulated over the past five years.

Recently signed with Sony/Red, expect one of the greatest entertainers in the southeast with a sound that blends the flavors of artists like Delbert McClinton, Tyrone Davis, and Huey Lewis. Jim Quick & Coastline has generously agreed to play this concert as a benefit. All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward Autism Speaks. If you are already a "Coastline Crazy", you can't miss out. If you are new to the scene, Jim plans to make you a fan by the end of the first song. Festival darlings the Carolina Chocolate Drops are coming into their own and fresh from a tour of Europe, we are pleased to have them return to Neighborhood Theatre.

Durham black string and folk resurrectionists the Carolina Chocolate Drops recently released their third studio album Genuine Negro Jig, their first with a major studio, and are enjoying more than a major regional following, but a burgeoning international following.

Carolina Chocolate Drops Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, is more revelation than revival. The old-time music that this trio of African-American musicians has been exploring for the last four yearswith banjo, fiddle, guitar, snare, kazoo, jugs, and bonesoffers pleasures both immediate and deep. Trouble In Your Mind and live-show favorite Cornbread and Butterbeans insist upon foot-tapping, if not a whirl around the closest dance floor, while others, like the brooding Kissin and Cussin and the more sensual Why Dont You Do Right?, invite comfortably seated rumination. But these generations-old songs, performed with both faithfulness and modernity, also represent a significant yet near-forgotten part of American musical history.

"The black string band and jug band traditions that were popular in the Carolinas in the 1920s and 1930s were probably doomed to oblivion until revivalists Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson met at a banjo convention in 2005. SIMPLIFIED

Fusing elements of rock, reggae, funk, and roots, the rollicking quartet has not only stunned critics with its intricate songwriting and versatile stage show but also managed to create a sound all its own, a sound that appears to be stimulating the masses. Simplified has not only performed more than 2,000 shows and been hailed as a Band on the Rise by Relix Magazine, but it has also earned the respect of such renown artists as O. A.R. Its safe to say that Simplified has evolved into a true force thanks to its one basic belief hard work, great music and a genuine passion for what they do. And theres nothing simple about that. Their latest release Brighter Days is a testament to the band's musical evolution. It began as a party, grew into a band, evolved into a sound, and emerged as an institution. Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band (aka the Booty Band) has gone through many changes since their fated onset in 2002. Today they are ready to shake the world, one cheek at a time.
The bands first official studio release, Now You Know, debuted in 2007 to critical acclaim. The Booty Band received Home Grown Music Networks Album of the Year and Band of the Year awards, as well as the #3 best regional album from WNCW, one of the top Triple A stations in the country. Awe-inspiring live shows, powerful original compositions, and crowd-pleasing presentations have helped the Booty Band build a solid nationwide fanbase. Having completed three national tours in 2010 alone, the band has worked hard and done well to keep this fanbase fired up and growing fast. They have secured headlining slots at many prestigious festivals including Wakarusa, Jam Cruise, Bear Creek, Jazz Aspen, Long Beach Funk Fest, Rock Boat, Bele Chere (six consecutive years), Floyd Fest, and Smile Fest.

MICKY and the MOTORCARS

Micky and the Motorcars, with their own band of Americana rock, bring an optimism and integrity a band only acquires when its been performing so long the only thing left to tell is the truth. After eight years and five albums, MMC still writes more than 90 percent of its music as it defines the lives of brothers Micky Braun (vocals, acoustic guitar) Gary Braun (vocals, guitars, mandolin, harmonica) childhood friend Mark McCoy (bass), Kris Farrow (guitars, saxophone) and Shane Vannerson (drums, percussion).
Micky and the Motorcars may be self-described as a little rough around the edges, but with its rocking sound, MMC shares real thoughts, is full of depth, and has a honest, raw emotion and energy bleeding through Mickys heart straight out into the crowd.

RECKLESS KELLY

For fifteen years Reckless Kelly has been doing things their way, bucking the mainstream system and playing by their own rules, straddling the fence between country and rock as if they built it themselves. Throughout the years their old school approach to recording has always adhered to one main objective: make each record better than the last. Their latest effort, "Good Luck & True Love" is no exception to this rule. Recorded in an old farmhouse-turned studio in Austin Texas, and released on the bands new independent label "No Big Deal Records," "Good Luck & True Love" is pure, driving, uncut Reckless Kelly. The songs are all written or co-written by front man Willy Braun and range in subject matter from road songs, ("Weatherbeaten Soul," "Hit The Ground Running") to songs about music, ("New Moon Over Nashville," "I Stayed Up All Night Again") and songs about good old-fashioned heartbreak ("Guarded Heart," "She Likes Money, He Likes Love," and "I Never Liked St. Valentine"). The album is the 9th in RK's ever-growing catalogue and is the 3rd they have produced by themselves. The Reckless boys also made it a point to track almost all of it live. Just 5 guys sitting in a room playing music, with minimal overdubs and aside from a harmony vocal from Dani Flowers, the band plays each and every instrument and part. "We wanted to make a record that sounded like we sound live, without any extra parts thrown in. We wanted it to sound like a band," said fiddle/mandolin player Cody Braun. "Keeping it all in the same space and making sure it was an album rather than just a collection of songs was the main goal, and I think we came pretty close to what we set out to do...there's a lot of continuity within this project." The result is an album that encompasses the last 15 years of Reckless Kelly. Ten new songs that capture the essence of a road worn and battle scarred band of brothers that aren't afraid to take risks and tell it like it is. That's country rock. Thats old school. MarchFourth writes and performs its own material, and also draws inspiration from an eclectic range of worldwide influences, such as Eastern European gypsy brass, samba, latin, funk, afro-beat, big-band, jazz, and rock music, as well as television, film, circus, and vaudeville.

FREAKY 5K TWILIGHT RACE
Charlotte's ONLY Costume Race at Twilight!

In the twilight hours of Saturday, October 29, 2011, hundreds of runners and revelers will race through the streets of NoDa in the Freaky 5k Race. The race will begin and end at the Neighborhood Theatre located at 511 East 36th Street, Charlotte, NC. Race Day registration opens at 5:00 p.m. and the race begins at 6:00 p.m. Costumes are encouraged, but optional.
Participants who have chosen to dress-up can enter the costume contest which will be judged between 5-6p.m. in front of Smelly Cat. The best three costumes will receive prizes. This is in addition to 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place prizes awarded to the fastest Male and Female runners. All prizes will be awarded immediately following the race.
100% of the proceeds from NoDaWEEN will benefit the NoDa Neighborhood Association. NoDa NA is dedicated to promoting the arts, advocating for greener environments, supporting small businesses, encouraging diversity, and aiding fellow charities. NoDa NA is a grassroots organization that does not have huge financial resources or wherewithal to produce massive events. NoDa NA relies on the efforts of our sponsors, donors, and volunteer staff to keep the neighborhood alive, vibrant, and streaming with tourists. The NoDa NA is also a federally recognized 501 (c)3 charitable organization.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

KiDaWEEN is another new addition to NoDaWEEN 2011. Seeing that so many kids and families participated in the Freaky 5K last year, KiDaWEEN has been added and will kick-off the day of festivities. And, the BEST part? KiDaWEEN is 100% FREE of charge. There will be face painting, bobbing for apples, story telling, and a kids costume contest. The top three costumes will receive prizes. At 3:00p.m., KiDaWEEN will show Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit on the Neighborhood Theatre big screen. The movie will let out in time for kids, family, and friends to participate in the Freaky 5K. The event is free, but any donation during the event is greatly appreciated and will directly benefit the NoDa Neighborhood Association.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a 2005 British clay-mation animated film, the first feature-length Wallace and Gromit film. It was produced by DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Animations, and released by DreamWorks Pictures. The film was directed by Nick Park and Steve Box and produced at the Aardman Animations studio in Bristol, United Kingdom. The film followed eccentric inventor Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) and his intelligent but silent dog, Gromit, as they come to the rescue of the residents of a village which is being plagued by a mutated rabbit before the annual vegetable competition.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

To cap off the NoDaWeen evening, check out Charlottes only midnight viewing of the cult-classic, Rocky Horror Picture Show on Neighborhood Theatres big screen. Live actors will help lead audience participation, and costumes are highly encouraged. Prop bags will be available for purchase inside the venue. Admission is only $7, so buy your tickets before they sell out!

Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 British musical horror comedy/rock opera film that parodies science fiction and B-movie horror films. It was directed by Jim Sharman. The film is an adaptation of the British musical stage production, The Rocky Horror Show. Richard OBrien, author of the stage show, was assisted by Sharman in writing the screenplay. The film introduces Tim Curry and features Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick along with cast members from the original Kings Road production of the play first performed in the Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court Theatre in 1973.

NoDaWEENs newest addition, Dinner And A Movie! This year, Dinner And A Movie will feature CARRIE, the 1976 original motion picture, shown on the big screen at Neighborhood Theatre. Jamie McLean Band (Acoustic) opens

CAROLYN WONDERLAND has the goods. A triple threat with her diverse songwriting, soulful vocals, and guitar goddess status - all featured on over twenty CDs, six of which are her releases - she has a pedigree in this business that's hard to match. A bit of a renegade, she likes to incorporate elements of Blues, Country, Swing, Zydeco, Surf, Gospel, Soul, and some nights, maybe even a Cumbia into the musical mix. Recent years have seen her stretching out musically working some expert whistling and scat singing into her shows. In addition to her trusty guitar, "Patty," Carolyn has been regularly playing her trumpet, and even occasionally the accordion, mandolin, or keys...she is threatening to take up nose flute if someone doesnt stop her...
Wonderland's songs have been featured on NBC's "Homicide," Fox's "Time of Your Life," & Houston NORML even made a video PSA set to Carolyn's "Annie's Scarlet Letter." She has toured with acts like Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter, sat-in with String Cheese Incident, Robert Earl Keen, and Los Lobos, and even sang the "National Anthem" at Sturgis Bike Week 2003 -- her 10th anniversary playing Sturgis -- before Robbie Kneivel's record-breaking jump over one hundred Harleys. Recently, she was a panelist at the University of Texas LBJ Library's "Instruments of Freedom" Forum with Kinky Friedman, Marcia Ball, Jerry Jeff Walker and others. She's been lucky enough to jam with mentors and friends like Bob Dylan, Eddy Shaver and Ray Benson. She's co-written songs with Ruthie Foster, Cindy Cashdollar, Candye Kane and Guy Forsyth.

PORTUGAL. THE MAN
Alberta Cross opens

Portugal. The Man is an experimental indie rock four-piece centered on frontman John Baldwin Gourleys abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourleys innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change.
Even though members were born in Alaska, the band formed in Portland, Oregon, USA, in 2004 with the union of Gourley (vocals, guitar, organ, machines) and his childhood friend Zachary Scott Carothers (Bass, percussion, vocals) after the break-up of their band Anatomy of a Ghost. Jason Sechrist (Drums and Gang) of Portland, OR joined in 2005. Current lineup includes Ryan Neighbors (Piano, Rhodes, Organ, Synth, Vocals). They are however known for fluidity in both their music and their lineup and often feature guest appearances.

Rough Language is a quarterly Poetry Competition, founded by Bethsheba A. Rem/Queen Sheba, that bring 15 poets from around the country to battle it out for $500-$1,000* winner take all competition. Toubab Krewe's strong Malian flavor is peppered with tastes of Caribbean, Jamaican, and, as the band puts it, "dirty south" music. Most of the band members' roots are in Asheville, North Carolina, and their southern neighbors often confuse the harp-like ngoni and kora for a banjo. Yet, Toubab Krewe's Teal Brown, Drew Heller, Justin Perkins, David Pransky, and Luke Quaranta emanate the energetic spirit that is an essential element of the dance music in Africa. Toubab Krewe's name is, in fact, a stellar reflection of their multicultural musical interests. The word "toubab" means "white people" or "foreigners" in the Malinke and Bambara languages and is used in a non-derogatory way to refer to white people all over West Africa. The spelling of "Krewe" references New Orleans, which Brown says is "because New Orleans is the gateway through which so much music came to us--ragtime, blues, jazz. It's a reference to that portal." The band has spent extensive time in West Africa studying and performing with musical legends such as Lamine Soumano, Vieux Kante, Madou Dembele, and Koungbanan Conde. Thus, their use of traditional instruments like the soku, kamel ngoni, and kora, is not only professional and informed, but inspired and natural, as well.

HELMET
2013 Wolves, Hectagons & Hoverboard open

HELMET, an alternative metal band from New York City, founded by vocalist and lead guitarist Page Hamilton.
Seeing Eye Dog, HELMETs seventh album, is one of the bands most uncompromising and ambitious releases, embodying the classic and utterly unique Helmet sound and pushing it into regions the band has never before explored. One big reason for that spirit of musical adventure is the record is essentially self-released (through the Work Song label). I just felt completely free to do whatever I wanted to do, says frontman Page Hamilton. It was really fun to make this record because I just felt this freedom. Freedom can also arise from limitation, something Hamilton knows wellas ever, he insisted on having few overdubs and edits on Seeing Eye Dog. This album is human and honest, he declares. People have always commented that we sound like our albums live, and our recording approach has a lot to do with that. Humans playing music will always be better than chop-shop rock.
Besides Hamilton, the humans on Seeing Eye Dog include drummer Kyle Stevenson, who joined Helmet in 2006, guitarist Dan Beeman, whos been on board since 2008, and long-time Helmet bassist Chris Traynor. (Dave Case is the bands touring bassist.) The album was produced by Hamilton, with additional production by Toshi Kasai (Melvins) and vocal production by Mark Renk.

Green River Ordinance & Gary Ray open

Boyce Avenue, a Florida-based band popular for its strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound, consists of the three brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. The brothers first came together as a band in 2004 when Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Fabian (guitar, vocals), and their older brother Daniel (bass, percussion, vocals) reconnected after pursuing their respective educational goals. While music was always a part of their lives and ultimately their collective goal, pursuing a higher education was also important to the brothers. So, after graduating from Harvard Law School, Daniel moved back to Florida, to join his brothers Fabian and Alejandro, who were both attending classes at the University of Florida. It was there that the brothers continued to write music and to perform local shows, and took their most formative steps toward becoming a band.

Donna The Buffalo returns to Neighborhood Theatre!
Donna the Buffalo's eclectic and often socially conscious music has it's base in traditional mountain music and is infused with elements of Cajun/ zydeco, rock, folk, reggae, and country. The groups core are vocalists Tara Nevins, who plays fiddle, guitar, accordion, and scrubboard, and guitarist Jeb Puryear. Keyboardist Dave McCracken, bassist Jay Sanders, and drummer Vic Stafford complete the ensemble.

Ten Out of Tenn is a unique community of artists bravely forging their way through the difficulties of todays music industry. Similar to the folk movement of the sixties in New York, (including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young), this exciting group of young musicians are passionate about one thing above all else: creating authentic, soul-driven music, that has nothing to do with ego, and everything to do with making art for arts sake.
TOT features a rotating group of artists who have collectively had well over one-hundred television song placements, as well as in film, and commercials. Taylor Swift included several of the artists on her celebrity playlist on iTunes, and members have shared the stage with Sarah McLachlan, R.E.M., Paul McCartney, John Mayer, and the Fray. These accomplishments are impressive, but it is when the TOT artists swap instruments on stage, gather around one mic, and improvise on their own and each others songs that the magic really happens. Authenticity and creative passion cannot be faked. And if these artists are anything, it is at the utmost, sincere. It is easy to see why Rolling Stone magazine just named Nashville as the Best Music Scene in the country. With so much talent, and such a strong sense of community, it seems that anything is possible for TOT.
The present lineup includes: Trent Dabbs , Gabe Dixon , Andrew Belle , K.S. Rhoads , Katie Herzig, Matthew Perryman Jones, Amy Stroup, Tyler James , Butterfly Boucher and Jeremy Lister , who happened to be a runner-up on NBCs Sing Off with his a capella group, Street Corner Symphony. The personal accolades for each of these artists could fill pages and pages, but again, to them, this is not the important factor. In the award-winning documentary Any Day Now, highlighting the TOT touring experience, Matthew Perryman Jones says about the artists, Its their life. Its what theyre made for. Theyre wired that way. This is far from some label-created gimmick to strike it rich. This is what music was made for: sharing, story-telling, and inspiring.

Matthew Perryman Jones - Matthew's song 'Satellites' was recently featured in major motion picture, Something Borrowed, his songs have been featured on television shows Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and Bones among many others. He has toured extensively with Ingrid Michealson and shared the stage with Patty Griffin, Paula Cole and Shawn Colvin. He has independently released four albums and his video for Save You by Becky Fluke (The Civil Wars, Martina McBride) featured actress Jamie Alexander (Thor, Kyle XY).
Gabe Dixon - Gabe was named one of the "Year's Best" by Paste, American Songwriter, and in the year-end Village Voice critics poll. His songs have been featured on shows from every major TV network and his song Find My Way was the main theme song in the #1 Sandra Bullock film The Proposal. His new album, One Spark out in August features members of Snow Patrol, Starsailor and a duet with most awarded artist in Grammy history, Alison Krauss. Dixon has played keys for Paul McCartney, OAR and Supertramp.
Katie Herzig - Katie is a Grammy award nominated singer-songwriter. Many are familiar with Katie's song, Hey Na Na which has been featured in Target and Honda commercials and she has had many songs featured on a number of TV shows, films and her song Look at You Now was on the Sex & The City Vol. 2 Soundtrack. She has appeared on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic and has toured with The Fray and Brandi Carlile. Her New album, 'The Waking Sleep' will be released through Downtown Records on Sept. 20th.
Jeremy Lister - Lister's a capella group, Street Corner Symphony was the fan-favorite in NBC's, The Sing Off and ended up claiming the second place title, Following the show, his group was asked to play for the 2010 Macy's Thanksgiving parade and to tour with one of the judges, Ben Folds. He has toured with Colbie Calait and Brett Dennen. His new album, The Bed You Made just came out and features a duet with multi-Grammy award winner, Alison Krauss.
Trent Dabbs - (Co-founder of TOT) Trent has released six solo albums and a duet EP with Ashley Monroe. K.S. Rhoads - K.S. is a singer-songwriter, producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He has arranged strings for Erin McCarley, Trent Dabbs and Third Day and has produced songs for Mia Carruthers, Erin McCarley and produced the Ten out of Tenn Christmas album. His album, Dead Language, received critical acclaim from press and his songs were featured in CSI Miami and World of Jenks. He is currently working on his next full length album that will be released in September and planning for his performance with the Grammy award winning Nashville Symphony Orchestra. He has played Sundance Film Festival and toured with Ari Hest and Marc Brossard.
Andrew Belle - Andrew Belle released his first album last year and in it's debut week reached #1 on the itunes singer-songwriter charts and #21 on Billboard Heetseekers charts. This record was also named as one of iTunes Top Ten Albums from 2010. His songs have been featured in Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Pretty Little Liars and many others. He has shared the stage with Ben Folds, Greg Laswell and Tyrone Wells. His newest song, Sky Still Blue, was featured in a national campaign for Windows 7 Cloud.
Amy Stroup - Amy Stroup released her first full length in 2006 and has sinced released a handful of EP's with songs that have been included in national advertising campaigns for WalMart and eHarmony as well as TV shows, Grey's Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters, Army Wives and many others. She has recorded songs with Grammy winning producer, Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift, The Band Perry) and she is currently working on a new band project with Trent Dabbs called Sugar & the Hi Lows, expected to be out early 2012.
Tyler James - Tyler spent the majority of last year touring as a member of the LA based band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, he has also shared shows with Mat Kearney, Paper Route and Diane Birch. He has had songs featured on Brothers and Sisters, The Hills and his duet with Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer) was featured on the Bridge to Terabithia soundtrack. In 2008, his single, Call My Name with Morgan Page was #1 on Billboards Heatseekers charts in 2008.
Butterfly Boucher - Butterfly is an Austrailian singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. She has spent the last year touring with Sarah McLachlan as her bass player and opening act. She has had several songs on Grey's Anatomy, Charmed and her duet with David Bowie was included in the Shrek 2 soundtrack. Her performances are featured on albums by Mat Kearney, David Poe, David Mead. She is currently finishing her third full length album and producing an album for Warner Brothers recording artist, Missy Higgins.

Fusing elements of midtempo breakbeats, big beat, old school hip hop and dub, DnB, glitch, IDM, electronica, death metal, grindcore, punk rock, alternative, folk, swing, and jazz; and sampling anything from the human history of sound and music, Bassnectar might be most accurately described as omni-tempo maximalism."

There are certain things in life that we never stop trying to figure out. The big things, the important things: love, pain, spirituality, a bit more love, a bit more pain. You get the idea. They're the issues that inspire endless works of philosophy, art, and poetry. They're the questions that inevitably lead to more questions. The Big Ones. But sometimes someone can take these issues and remind us of their most important aspect: what we actually do understand. Nashville based singer/songwriter Dave Barnes is one of these people. His songs often manage to do something even more difficult than critical analysis. They celebrate what we can grasp. Like much of the soul and R&B that influenced him during his southern childhood, Barnes' music connects with the listener both viscerally and emotionally in such a manner that we too immediately understand where he's coming from.

At least as magical and maybe more so as debuting in 2003 with a multi-chart gold single, selling millions of albums, winning a Grammy, racking up reams of critical acclaim, opening for The Rolling Stones, and many more accomplishments for the Texican rocknroll trio of brothers. Plus playing and recording with such legends as Willie Nelson and Carlos Santana, associations that give a strong hint at whats at work here on Rockpango. After proving themselves one of the most stunning and wonderful musical success stories of the last decade, Los Lonely Boys are now carving out their legend with their fourth studio album. Inveterate storyteller Paul Thorn credits his gift of gab to being the son of a Pentecostal preacher. "You get to know how to get along with almost everybody. You just have to sit down and start getting to know one another." Thorn has a lot about himself to tell. One would expect to hear great stories from a guy who boxed Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran on national television, made chairs for a living, skydives for fun, had his first singing gig at age three, and who happens to be one of the South's finest songwriters. Paul Thorn doesn't disappoint.Thorn started down his music path when he was not long out of diapers. "As a child, I sang in churches. My first paying gig was at a revival with my father when everybody came around and put money in my tambourine. After the service, there was a little girl, also about three years old, who I had a crush on. I stuffed the money I got all down in my pockets. After the service we sat around the back of the church and I bought her a Coke with the money I'd earned. That was my first paying gig, and I guess my first date." Thorn writes and performs songs taken from life - good times, bad times, and everything in between. His songs are often constructed on the universal themes of love, loss, and yearning. But far from ever sounding commonplace, Thorn is able to weave in a slightly loopy Southern sense of the unexpected that draws you in and never lets go. It's a concert/party you won't want to miss!

We Walk This Road Tour - This record is a celebration of African-American music over the past one hundred years and its social messages from the last thirty. Although we cover a whole timeline of different eras on We Walk This Road, what ties these songs together remain their message of hope, their ability to uplift. After we finished our last record, Colorblind, we began searching for a great producer to help guide the follow up. We wanted someone who understood me and the road Ive walked this far, who understood our connections of my roots within rock and gospel and the church, who would help us put those things in their most compelling context.
T Bone Burnett shared the vision of how gospel, blues and rock could be put together in a way that could relate to my history and connect to my present. It was important to us that we make the record we wanted to make, even if the end result was unclassifiable. We just focused on making great songs and great music that spoke to me, and that reflected the way I try to speak to the world. We recorded We Walk This Road over about two years, after T Bone had finished his record with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant. We went into the studio with virtual libraries of songs, whole volumes worth of material to go through. T Bone brought in old archival songs from the twenties and thirties and many of them were in the public domain. I had songs that I had written with the band, or that other artists had sent me, and we sat down and starting sifting through history.
When we found something we liked, we would either cover it or re-work it using our own words or melodies. Through this creation came an education. T Bone opened a lot of doors for me serving as a link between the past and the present. He knows how to take something from the past and bring it into the present while still allowing the artist to make it his own, in the same way that Hendrix took Dylans All Along the Watchtower and made it belong to him. T Bone listens to music that our grandmothers would listen to as childrennot even music that our fathers listened to, but songs that go even further back...some from Gospel and Christian blues, the music that people working in fields across the south likely sang nearly a century ago. Those are the real roots of rock and roll, where everything else comes from.
I was only allowed to listen to modern Christian and gospel music growing up, so there was so much I didnt know about. My mind is expanded now. The record is finished and I still feel as if Im not done. Ive spent over $5,000 on iTunes in the past eighteen months just catching up. Before this record, I didnt sift through music past the Seventies. I didnt know about Blind Willie Johnson, or Chess Records. I thank T Bone for being a tour guide into the deepest parts of my musical roots.
We connected the last one hundred years of African-American music in the way people used to: You write your own songs, you cover other peoples material, you re-work older songs. We had some amazing people come in to help. Leon Russell came by to hang out and wound up playing piano on the last track, Salvation. Ben Harper plays guitar and sings on If I Had My Way. The base of that song came from Blind Willie Johnson, and it was really difficult to get right. It was a country tune for a while. I had honestly given up on it. But Ben came down and said, Let me get in there! I know just what to do! He went in there and smoked the choruses, and I thought, Now weve got a tune. Its one of my favorite songs on the record.

BUCKETHEAD - Although a multi-instrumentalist, Buckethead is best known for his electric guitar playing, and famed for his distinctive stage outfit and elaborate stage shows. He has been voted number 8 on a list in GuitarOne magazine of the Top 20 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time. He has released 32 solo albums and performed on over 50 more since 1992. He has also made guest appearances on more than 40 different albums by various artists. His music spans such diverse areas as progressive metal, thrash metal, funk, ambient, jazz, dub, and avant-garde music.

When performing in his theatrical persona, Buckethead used to wear a KFC bucket (emblazoned with an orange bumper sticker that read FUNERAL in black block letters) on his head and a plain white costume mask (commonly found in costume shops and used primarily for dramatic theater productions). More recently, he has switched to a plain white bucket no longer bearing the KFC logo. He also incorporates nunchaku, robot dancing, and toy trading into his stage performances. Bucketheads persona represents a character who was raised by chickens and has made it his mission in life to alert the world to the ongoing chicken holocaust in fast-food joints around the globe.


THAT 1 GUY - Like a one-man band plucked from the pages of Dr. Seuss, That 1 Guy delivers earthshaking future funk from the magic pipe to accompany his madcap lyrics about turbo snails, meat storms, and weasel pot pies.
Funky Bean, Buttmachine, Mustaches and Laser beams. It reads like a page out of a Dr. Seuss book, but for Mike Silverman, better known as That 1 Guy, it is just the reality he was searching for.
At 150-200 live shows each year people gather to see his mad scientist at work, curiously watching as That 1 Guy plugs an electric chord into the heel of a cowboy boot and transforms it into an instrument. He howls and the audience joins him like a pack of coyotes. They even chime in for the song Weasel Pot Pie, offering rhymes to finish a line about cinnamon scones: Twilight Zones? Al Capones? Frank Stallones? That 1 Guy laughs and offers the grin of a Cheshire cat. Here is a man who loves his job.
With his curious instrument, creative performances and abundant talent, That 1 Guy has been wowing crowds around the world at Big Day Out, Glastonbury, Monterrey Jazz Festival, Lowlands, Wakarusa and numerous other festivals. In 2007 he joined Guns N Roses guitarist Buckethead on an American tour before headlining his own Mustaches and Laser Beams tour through North America.

THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE (Phonte + Nicolay) w/live band

Consisting of rapper/singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album, Connected, was released in 2004 to positive reviews, and was praised by legendary DJs such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, and DJ Spinna for its inventive mix of hip-hop, R&B, and electronica. Their sophomore album, Leave It All Behind (2008) found The Foreign Exchange much closer in geography (Nicolay becoming a resident of Wilmington, NC), but located much further from their hip-hop origins. On the strength of their exhilarating live show and several nationally programmed music videos, Leave It All Behind became the groups most successful album to date, culminating in a Grammy-nomination for the albums first single, Daykeeper. Authenticity, released on October 12, 2010 on +FE Music, is The Foreign Exchanges third album.

Brandon McSwain Band opens

Country music artist Benton Blount found his passion for singing and songwriting as a teenager growing up in the mountains of North Carolina. Drawing on the musical talents of his father who played in Motown bands and his mothers family who always sang in church, Benton found his passion for music in church. The lead singer for the group 7-Miles since 1997, Benton moved to Nashville, TN to make his mark on the country music scene and has recently signed a record deal with Golden Music of Greenville, SC. Bentons band now plays more than 100 dates each year, and has had the chance to play alongside such bands as Newsong, Chris Rice, the Katinas, and Bleach.

Sometimes in life we all stumble and sometimes when we stumble we fall, its when we fall that are friends and family are there to help us back up. For those of you who dont know our good friend Bobbi Puckett had an unfortunate accident while camping back in July and had to spend twelve days in the hospital and has been unable to work. Bobbi has been a staple in NoDa for quite some time as well as helping to run Cabo Fish Taco f...(tharr be more)or the past five years. Anyone who has been lucky enough to spend any time with her knows how truly amazing she is and how your life is better for having known her. So we, her friends, co-workers, and family are putting on a little benefit to help her out. Like many of us Bobbi is without medical insurance so is picking up the tab on her hospital bills. So with the help of Neighborhood Theater we are throwing a little celebration to help ease a little of Bobbi's burden. In 1827, Joseph Smith, Jr. was only 21 years old when he received a prophetic calling to translate ancient scriptures that would soon be published as The Book of Mormon. Less than three years later, he founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that today has 14 million followers and is the 4th largest religious denomination in the United States.

Plates of Gold follows Joseph's early adult years and portrays the events that lead up to the publishing of The Book of Mormon and the founding of a new worldwide church. The film also details Joseph's personal life and his desire to find forgiveness, acceptance and salvation from God. Directed by Christian Vuissa (The Errand of Angels, One Good Man).

Acoustic Syndicate is a rock/folk/bluegrass band from North Carolina formed in 1992. They have toured nationally in the US, including appearances at Farm Aid and the Bonnaroo festival. Their sound is characterized by three-part vocal harmony and complex polyrhythmic banjo playing. Lyrically, the group often discusses themes relating to subsistence, sustainability and quality of life.


Sons of Bill is a five-piece alt-country rock band from Charlottesville, Virginia featuring brothers James, Sam and Abe Wilson, as well as Seth Green and Todd Wellons. The band began pre-production work on their new album in the Spring of 2010. In December 2010 they entered Sound of Music Studios with David Lowery of 90's alt-rock band Cracker producing and John Morand engineering. In March 2011 the band initiated a fan-funded campaign through the innovative website Kickstarter to help offset recording and production costs. The campaign was a tremendous success, hitting it's $20,000 goal in just over 24 hours and eventually doubling that goal in the month it was active. The band continued working at Sound of Music, in addition to returning to PLYRZ Studios to work with producer and mixer Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty), and recording at Mission Sound Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Stockholm Syndrome is made up of an all-star cast and is ready to serve up its potent brew of provocative songs and thrilling, genre-transcending musicianship to worldwide audiences.
Stockholm Syndrome is a collaboration between Dave Schools of Widespread Panic and Jerry Joseph of the Jackmormons. They put together their Dream Team including Eric McFadden (a San Francisco-based guitarist who has worked with Keb Mo, Les Claypool and George Clintons P-Funk All Stars), Danny Louis (an Upstate NY based keyboard virtuoso widely known for his role in Govt Mule and Cheap Trick) and drummer Wally Ingram (an L.A.-based drummer who has worked with Jackson Browne, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman and David Lindley). All three musicians were on board and are now back for more live dates and a pending studio album.

Organized by my roommate and I, the fest is corporate sponsor-free and meticulously designed to cater to a broad demographic of music-lovers and show-goers. It's also scheduled so you can see each and every band involved (none of that multiple shows at once business). Throughout the 3 days we host over 30 local and touring bands across 9 venues, spaces and houses, and also incorporate a handful of events and games to maximize the experience and fun to be had.

*The main goal of Recess Fest is to introduce new music to Charlotte, put the spotlight on some of the finest local musicians this city has to offer, and get mass amounts of people out to enjoy and revisit some of those care-free feelings we used to have in grade school, but typically seem to lose somewhere as we grow up. We're two big, big kids who just want to have fun and make great things happen for a city we love.

Charlottes biggest and hottest Latin artists will play a live concert at The Neighborhood Theatre on Saturday, July 30 at 8 p.m. World-renowned musicians DS 'The Evolution' & Leydy Bonilla will join forces for the first time for what is sure to be an unforgettable live music experience.

Born in New York, but with Dominican and Puerto Rican roots, the members of urban music duo DS 'The Evolution' fuse Hip Hop and Reggaeton with traditional Latin rhythms such as Bachata and Merengue. Made up of Christopher Marrero and Jefrey Liranzo, DS 'The Evolution' has already reached some major accomplishments since its inception in 2007 sharing the stage with the likes of Wisin & Yandel, Aventura, Pitbull, and Monchy & Alexandra, to name a few. Theyve also appeared on national and international television stations and toured through several major U.S. cities and the Dominican Republic.

Pink Floyd THE WALL is a 1982 British live-action/animated musical film directed by Alan Parker based on the 1979 Pink Floyd album The Wall. The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd vocalist and bassist Roger Waters. The film is highly metaphorical and is rich in symbolic imagery and sound. It features very little dialogue and is mainly driven by Pink Floyd's music.
The film contains fifteen minutes of elaborate animation sequences by the political cartoonist and illustrator Gerald Scarfe, part of which depict a nightmarish vision of the German bombing campaign over the United Kingdom during World War II set to the song "Goodbye Blue Sky".

Taste the sabor of Spanish Caribbean cuisine, pick up handmade artisan craftwork, and sip tropical mojitos on a warm summer night. You won't want to miss the contagious energy of the Caribbean at this one-of-a-kind cultural experience.

Miss North Carolina Pole Dancing Competition
For the first time in Charlotte, NC, MC Healthcare will conduct a national pole dance competition. We've all heard the excitement and motivation that comes from pole fitness classes and this is the chance for pole dance professional, amateur, athletes and performers to compete in a sporting forum. This competition is 1 of 4 that will be take place in the southern region that is only open to females 18 and up, much like gymnastic competitions; they will be judged on technique, execution and presentation. The pole fitness era has taken off all around with pole dance classes, parties and world competitions; it has even made its mark in the Guinness Book of World Records. Organizations like the PFA of America, PDFI of Russia, WPDF of France just to name a few, are working to include Pole Dancing as an Olympic Sport under the gymnastic umbrella.

Mighty Grip, Pole Nation and Tite Grip are the national sponsors of the competition, they have aided in the dramatic growth of the industry across the country. In 2005 North Carolina housed 1 or 2 pole studios and now there are over 10 instructional pole dance companies across the state. The concept of pole fitness is to encourage health and fitness along with building self esteem and sisterhood in a fun and exciting environment. MC Healthcare is the driving force of the competitions and their goals are to promote better health through physical activity, better eating habits and develop community-based programs to help people get on the right track of living healthier and more productive lifestyles. The event will feature performances by local and statewide pole dance studios, a fashion show, free health screenings, workshop classes and the pole dance/fitness competitions.

Music Matters has been serving the Charlotte/Matthews community for 5 years, providing music instruction to students of all ages, but mostly to kids 5-18 years old. This concert will feature students of Music Matters performing music of their own choosing, ranging from Beethoven and Stevie Wonder to Beatles and Metallica and everything in between including some original music too! This concert is also serving as a fundraiser to help Music Matters move to a new location because they are being "forced-out" of their current location to accommodate the building of a new highway/bypass, since Music Matters doesn't own the building their currently in, the state provides no funds for relocation. This is your chance to help keep a vital community service up and running and listen to some budding young talent!

Los Angeles, CA- Best selling Australian artist Xavier Rudd will be returning to the US for a 21 city headlining tour. The TAP ROOT TOUR is Rudds first solo run of a World Tour in support of his 2010 Koonyum Sun album release. Ian Thomas opens

With THE RAINWATER LP, Citizen Cope offers the clearest distillation yet of his distinct musical approach, a laidback gumbo of acoustic blues, singer/songwriter rock n roll and deep soul grooves. Born Clarence Greenwood, but known to friends and fans as simply Cope, the Brooklyn-based artist has crafted an album redolent of such classic tunesmiths as Randy Newman and Stevie Wonder both major touchstones for his emotively penned songs. As such, its virtually impossible to put a finger on Citizen Copes idiosyncratically inimitable sound.
The only way to explain my music is to say you gotta listen to it, Greenwood says. I dont think there is any easy description of it. Somebody once said something about urban folk, which I wasnt mad at.
THE RAINWATER LP comes nearly four years after Citizen Copes acclaimed 2006 third album, EVERY WAKING MOMENT. Not that Greenwood wasnt busy the hard-touring troubadour spent much of that time on the road, introducing fans new and old to his already substantial body of work.

Citizen Cope draws from a broad soundscape - reggae, downbeat hip-hop and old fashioned folk.

THE AVETT BROTHERS w/Grace Potter & the Nocturnals @ BOJANGLES' COLISEUM

There is no harmony like brotherly harmony. Something indelible in the weave of voices and play of sensibilities is stamped into the fraternal DNA and also stems from a lifetime of shared experiences. You can hear it in classic brother acts across the musical spectrum, from the Louvin Brothers to the Everly Brothers and on down the decades through the Wilson brothers (Beach Boys), the Davies brothers (Kinks), the Allman Brothers and even the Brothers Gibb (a.k.a., the Bee Gees). You can clearly hear fraternal magic at work in the songs of Scott and Seth Avett, better known as the Avett Brothers, as well.

The Avett Brothers are a non-traditional bluegrass band that originated in Concord, North Carolina. The two brothers, Seth and Scott, formed the group after the breakup of the former rock band, Nemo, adding a third member, Bob Crawford. More recently, they have been joined by cellist Joe Kwon. The Avett Brothers combine old-time country, bluegrass, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, honky tonk and ragtime to produce a sound described by the Washington Post as post civil-war modern rock, or by other reviewers as grungegrass.

JUNIOR BROWN
Danielle Howle & Bret Mosley Duo open

There's usually a wide-eyed look accompanying one who witnesses Junior's unique instrumental prowess for the first time... or the second, or third, for that matter. Junior invented his own guitar, one that combines the standard 6-string guitar and the steel guitar. He calls it the "guit-steel."

I was playing both the steel and guitar, switching back and forth a lot while I sang, and it was kind of awkward. But then I had this dream where they just kind of melted together. When I woke up, I thought 'You know, that thing would work!' They made double-neck guitars and double-neck steels,so why not one of each?

A call was made to guitar maker Michael Stevens, whose expertise made the dream a reality, and around 1985 the guit-steel was born. Last year Junior once again enlisted the services of Stevens to make a second guit-steel, a cherry-red axe affectionately nicknamed "Big Red." In Junior's hands, the guit-steel is an amazing tool, a means to creating some of the hottest, most heartfelt playing heard in years (and in a town like Austin, that's saying something). His talents have led major magazines like Musician to herald Junior as a genius. Life magazine honored him as the only contemporary musician included in their "All Time Country Band," and Guitar Player magazine's 1994 "Best of..." listings made him their #1 lap steel player, #2 Country Artist, and #3 country album (Guit With It).

Conspirator on tour...live electronica band...the news comes on the heels of a series of performances that have created quite a bit of buzz among band and fans, alike. While Brownstein and Magner have occasionally invited other musicians to their live shows, the new Conspirator has proven to be a new, full band sound emerging not only from the groups mentality, but by featuring a solidified, returning, 4-piece lineup. Live music fans have come to embrace Conspirator for their signature high energy, electronic-based sets and their legendary album, The Key, which has been a staple of the bands live repertoire for years. Now, with a firmly set 4-piece band, fans can expect performances featuring increased live improv and a refreshing musical flow, peppered with some surprises. Inspired by new collaborations and the combined musical histories of the performers, Conspirator is set to get the scene talking in 2011.

Lightnin' Malcolm opens

Delbert McClinton proudly defies classifications. His music blends his Texas roots with roadhouse rock, juke-joint blues, Memphis soul and country. During his entire recording career, record labels have consistently tried to pigeonhole Delbert's music. But if you ask the critics about Delbert's dynamic vocals and harmonica style, you'll hear descriptions ranging from 'honky-tonk,' 'blue-eyed soul,' and 'Texas stomp' to 'country rock' and 'blues.' Delbert's music rebels against traditional categorization. Ask Delbert what kind of music he plays and he'll say, "Fun music."

McClinton was raised in Fort Worth, Texas, and cut his musical teeth playing in honky tonk bars in the '50s, sometimes jamming in back of a screen to protect him from flying beer bottles. His first taste of national success came in 1962, when he played harmonica on Bruce Chanel's classic song, "Hey! Baby." Soon he was touring and recording. His early days included meeting with a pre-fame John Lennon during a 1962 U.K. tour, during which McClinton showed Lennon a thing or two on the harmonica.
A succession of influential and critically acclaimed albums followed, along with coups like appearing on "Saturday Night Live" in its heyday -- an acknowledgement of the pages torn from Delbert's play book by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi when they formed The Blues Brothers. He scored hits like "Giving It Up For Your Love" and "Sandy Beaches," won a Grammy with Bonnie Raitt for their "Good Man/Good Woman" duet, and over the years has enjoyed covers of his songs by Emmylou Harris, The Blues Brothers, Vince Gill, Wynonna, Lee Roy Parnell, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, among others.

YO MAMA'S BIG FAT BOOTY BAND

It began as a party, grew into a band, evolved into a sound, and emerged as an institution. Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band (aka the Booty Band) has gone through many changes since their fated onset in 2002. Today they are ready to shake the world, one cheek at a time.
The bands first official studio release, Now You Know, debuted in 2007 to critical acclaim. The Booty Band received Home Grown Music Networks Album of the Year and Band of the Year awards, as well as the #3 best regional album from WNCW, one of the top Triple A stations in the country. Awe-inspiring live shows, powerful original compositions, and crowd-pleasing presentations have helped the Booty Band build a solid nationwide fanbase. Having completed three national tours in 2010 alone, the band has worked hard and done well to keep this fanbase fired up and growing fast. They have secured headlining slots at many prestigious festivals including Wakarusa, Jam Cruise, Bear Creek, Jazz Aspen, Long Beach Funk Fest, Rock Boat, Bele Chere (six consecutive years), Floyd Fest, and Smile Fest.
The Booty Band's second studio album, Doin It Hard, is a reflection of their approach to music, touring, performing, recording, and life in general. Recorded in June 2010 at the City of Progress Studios in Miami, FL under the cultivated ear of DJ Le Spam (Andrew Yeomanson), Doin It Hard is Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band - next-generation, redefined for a new decade. Doin It Hard will hit the streets on March 27, 2012 release and will be available on 12 vinyl, compact disc, and digital download.

CODY CANADA & The DEPARTED
Statesboro Revue opens

In the wake of Cross Canadian Ragweeds decision to part ways, CODY CANADA resurfaced with an armament of musicians and a mission in mind. With his long time Ragweed band mate, JEREMY PLATO (bass) the two made a seamless transition into the world of The DEPARTED, as in CODY CANADA & The DEPARTED'. We kicked around several ideas for names, Canada said. Were all from different bands and we wanted something to sound like we came from different places. The Departed was right on the money. Along with Canada and Plato, The Departed rounds out with Seth James on guitar (Seth James Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard), Steve Littleton on B3 organ and keys (Live Oak Decline, Stoney LaRue & the Arsenals, Medicine Show) and Dave Bowen on drums (Stoney LaRue, Bleu Edmondson, Dale Watson). Because they have traveled in the same circles for years, the band members are all familiar with each other and familiar with each others style of playing. More than likely theyve all played on the same stage at one time or another already. Its this familiarity with each other that made their first project so uncomplicated. Although The Departed is writing and will record original material, the bands first priority was getting into the studio and cutting the Oklahoma tribute album that Cody has wanted to do for years.

This Is Indian Land is a 15-track deep buffet of really kick-ass Okie songs, Canada states. He jokingly says It might sound like originals because not many people have ever heard these songs. But in fact, the album is loaded with well-known selections like Kevin Welchs Kickin Back in Amsterdam and True Love Never Dies, JJ Cales If Youre Ever in Oklahoma and Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Leon Russells Home Sweet Oklahoma. Of course there were a few tracks picked for more personal reasons. Cody notes, The Ballad of Rosalie (Randy Pease) was the first song I ever heard in Stillwater. Little Rain Will Do (Greg Jacobs) is just an awesome historical song Ive been wanting to record since the first time I heard it. Randy Crouchs Face On Mars really kind of frightened us. A lot of people wanted us to do it but we didnt know what to do with it. We sat there for a whole day trying to get it arranged and find a groove for it. We made it happen and its one of my favorites on the album.

Proposed Noise Ordinance Changes by City Council
The City of Charlotte is trying to:
Economically oppress owners of coffee shops, bars, restaurants, shops and other businesses in neighborhoods throughout the City of Charlotte
Take away a business owners right to provide services that they believe their customers want or that they themselves want to offer a community
Severely hinder the existence of live music in our community
Take away a citizens right to listen to live music at a public business
It seems as though the views of a very few number of people, from a very limited number of geographic regions within the City of Charlotte, who have complained intermittently and infrequently over the years is being given more weight than the literally thousands of people who have validated live music by paying money (be it in the form of a cover charge to hear a band, or paying for their dinner and drinks at a business while they offer live music) and attending the hundreds of different live music endeavors at local businesses spread throughout the City of Charlotte.
In a nutshell, it is being recommended that, For bars and restaurants:
1. No live music can be amplified outdoors within 400 feet of residences
2. Jukeboxes, TVs, etc. will not be allowed to be audible within residential zoning regardless of distance
3. Live music (amplified or acoustic) and other forms of entertainment will not be allowed to be audible within residential zoning regardless of distance except as permitted below
For anyone who wants to put together multiple events or a series of events at a location:
1. The 25 year old decibel limit of 70 dB is not even being considered by the committee as a component that requires evaluation, research and discussion (please review decibel level examples below to put this into context)
2. The new proposal calls for only 15 hours per address for an entire year. The current number of hours available for a sound permit per address for an entire year is only 10 hours if the events will draw less than 1,000 people, and 20 hours if the events will draw more than 1,000 people.

MYSTIKAL, born Michael Lawrence Tyler in New Orleans, is a Grammy award nominated American rapper and actor. He released his self-titled debut album in 1994 and has since released 1996s Mind of Mystikal, 1997s Unpredictable, 1998s Ghetto Fabulous, 2000s Lets Get Ready and 2001s Tarantula. Is there really such a thing as a hillbilly band covering rock classics? You betcha. They are called Hayseed Dixie and they play Rockgrass.

Barley Scotch is on lead vocals, fiddle and guitar. The Reverend Don-Wayne Reno is on banjo, Deacon Dale Reno is on mandolin and guitar and Jake Bakesnake Byers is on acoustic bass. Hayseed Dixie are an awesome live band, who have, to date, released 9 albums. The latest, Killer Grass was released in 2010. Songs by artists such as Kiss, Outkast, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith get the Rockgrass treatment, but the band play original songs too. - numbers such as Moonshiners Daughter, Kirby Hill and Blind Beggar Breakdown raise the roof at live shows. Hayseed Dixie songs cover the four key elements of any song worth playing; - Drinkin, Cheatin, Killin and Hell! - The band also recorded an album of rocked-up bluegrass classics, called *Choose Your Own Title using the name The Kerosene Brothers.

Brothers Dale Reno and DonWayne Reno are the sons of bluegrass maestro Don Reno, who wrote many hits, including Dueling Banjos, and the band even once played at a house-warming party for AC/DC bass player Cliff Williams.

The Latin American Coalition invites you to our third annual Brazilian Celebration A NIGHT IN RIO a journey through Brazil in an evening featuring traditional dancing; live musical performances of Samba, Bossa Nova, and Brazilian Beats; authentic foods; and arts and crafts. You won't want to miss the contagious energy of Brazils famous Carnaval at this one-of-a-kind cultural experience.

The Carnival celebration will start with a free samba lessons to get the crowd moving. Demonstrations of capoeira, an Afro- Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music and dance, will be provided JustBrazil. There will be live samba and traditional dancing by Movimentos de Samba. Taking influence from Drum and Bass, Metal, and Hip Hop, EXCISION is a Dubstep artist who must be heard to be fully believed. Combining the morphing basslines of Drum and Bass, the aggressive energy of Metal, and the laid back vibes of hip hop, Excisions style is incomparable.
At only 22, this young Canadians passion for music has already driven him to become one of the biggest Dubstep acts of North America, along with DatsiK. Anyone who has heard a set by this bad boy has walked away feeling energized and refreshed. Upon the selling out and repressing of his first release, No Escape on his own label Rottun Recordings, it became apparent that there was a large demand for the dark side of Dubstep. Chris Thile has changed the mandolin forever, elevating it from its origins as a relatively simple folk and bluegrass instrument to the sophistication and brilliance of the finest jazz improvisation and classical performance. In the 2009-10 season, he premieres his Mandolin Concerto with six orchestras in the US. For more than 15 years, Thile played in the wildly popular band Nickel Creek, with whom he released three albums and sold two million records, was awarded a Grammy in 2002, and traveled the world on sold-out concert tours. As a soloist he has released four albums, as well as performing and recording extensively as a duo with double bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer and with fellow eminent mandolinist Mike Marshall. He has written a duo for Meyer and pianist Emanuel Ax; recorded with Yo-Yo Ma, Renee Fleming and Joshua Bell; and collaborated with a pantheon of bluegrass innovators including Bela Fleck, Dolly Parton, the Dixie Chicks, Jerry Douglas, and Sam Bush. Punch Brothers have been nominated for two Grammys this year. The nominations are for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for the song "Pride" with Dierks Bentley and Del McCoury and Best Country Instrumental Performance for the song "New Chance Blues."

What In The World Are They Spraying? is an investigation into all aspects of the phenomenon of chemtrails. Over the past decade and more, long white trails emanating from jet planes have been seen lingering in the skies all over the planet, often expanding and merging to form vast swathes of artificial cloud cover.

Robert Cray, the Five-time Grammy award winner and 11-time nominee has been practicing his craft professionally for over 35 years. Known for his good-time, uptown, low-down blues, Cray has inspired critics to praise his soulful vocal and instrumental artistry, earned respect from his peers, and sent young guitarists running back to the woodshed. Robert finds inspiration outside of blues; he looks to Caribbean, salsa and reggae to keep his sound fresh. Tim Parsons of Blues Revue Magazine says Crays sound speaks eloquence, capturing the attention of listeners who lean closer when he makes his guitar whisper. The rhythm is engaging, the stories compelling. Its like being in a groovy conversation. In 2011, Robert was inducted into the Blues Foundations Hall of Fame, an honor he greatly deserved. Cray was recently featured on the cover of Blues Revue Magazine. With over 20 albums under his belt, Cray continues to entertain blues fans both young and old. The Band is made up of successful musicians in their own right. Drummer Tony Braunagel has worked all over the world doing many things including producing and co-producing records for the likes of Eric Burdon and Curtis Salgado and acting on the sitcom, According to Jim. Braunagel joined The Robert Cray Band in 2009. At age 19, keyboard player Jim Pugh started playing Soul Jazz and BBQ Blues at Dottie Ivorys Stardust Lounge in San Francisco. Pugh has performed with Johnny Taylor, Little Milton and Otis Rush and recorded with Etta James, Van Morrison, and B.B. King. Jim has been a member of The Robert Cray Band since 1989. Bassist Richard Cousins has played bass for many people including Etta James, John Lee Hooker, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King. He started playing with Robert Cray in 1974 and played in the band until 1991. Cousins returned to the band in 2009.

Its not every day that you get a chance to see a member of Led Zeppelin live. But thats exactly what lucky Charlotteans will be getting on February 7th, when Robert Plant and his Band of Joy take the stage at Ovens Auditorium. Touring in support of his critically acclaimed album, Band of Joy. And if youre wondering, yes, the band has been known to play a Zeppelin song or two during their live performance. Backing Plant will be the same group that played with him on the record: Patty Griffin, vocals; Darrell Scott, multi-instrumentalist/vocals; Byron House, bass/vocals; Marco Giovino, drums and percussion/vocals; and co-producer Buddy Miller, guitar/vocals. The North Mississippi All Stars will open for the group.

Giving homage in a continually evolving artistic outlet, the Dark Star Orchestra recreates historic Grateful Dead set lists with compelling accuracy. Each night, the Chicago-based band decides on performing one show from the over 2,500 that the Grateful Dead originally performed during their 30 year tenure as fathers of improvisational rock.

Dark Star Orchestra presents the complete original set list, song by song, and in order, with uncanny faithful interpretation. To date, DSO has covered more than 1,300 different Grateful Dead shows.

At the end of every performance, the band announces the date and venue where the original show just covered took place. Dark Star Orchestra dips into every incarnation of the Dead, so most fans can "see" shows that happened long before they were born.

It seems that every Celtic band is on tour in North America during the six to eight weeks that lead up to St. Patricks Day. Celtic albums tend to reflect this schedule as well, so its a rare and welcome event that on August 3, 2010 Gaelic Storm released Cabbage, its seventh studio album and fourth on their own label Lost Again Records. Its nicely out of sync with the norm, but when you are a band that spends over 200 days a year on the road, its a near miracle that you find time to write, record and release an album at all. Following the path of the bands 2008 release, Whats The Rumpus?, Cabbage debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Chart, additionally peaking at #14 on the iTunes overall Album Chart and #11 on the Billboard Independent Album Chart.
After a start playing monthly gigs for friends at Santa Monicas OBriens Tavern in 1995, the bands popularity skyrocketed when it appeared in James Camerons Titanic as the Celtic party band in the ships steerage. Unlike so many other bands that were unable to sustain a career after receiving near-blinding initial exposure, Gaelic Storm has amassed a large, loyal and ever-growing following. After three studio albums on Virgin/EMI early on, the band has since flourished in an extreme DIY fashion by not only launching their own label, Lost Again Records, and releasing their albums themselves but also by designing all their own album art, posters and advertisements, and spearheading all their own merchandising, book-keeping and marketing. Gaelic Storm is a truly self-contained entity; an indie model for the new music industry that knows its identity and audience, and stays in close contact with its fans.
While Gaelic Storm plays Celtic music that hearkens back to the traditional music of Ireland, they are hardly traditionalists, adding modern sounds and drawing influences from American rock and pop as well as music styles from around the world. This is a band with its feet firmly planted in the present, appearing on two EA Sports Games and their song Kiss Me Im Irish has been used in a Hallmark greeting card in 2008. Set II will feature the bluegrass stylings of Larry Keel on guitar and his wife Jenny Keel on bass with Keller playing his mini twelve-string (wanna-be mandolin) guitar. Long considered one of the most unique and prolific performers in all of rock, the Fredericksburg, Virginia native is known for flying by the seat of his pants on stage, utilizing an unorthodox approach that centers around an Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, which allows Keller to alternate between several instruments on stage. For Keller Williams latest studio release, ODD (August 2009 / SCI Fidelity Records), Keller covers an impressive amount of stylistic ground - everything from the off-the-wall (Day at the Office) to piano-based lounge music (Warning), and even a tribute to legendary afrobeat musician Fela Kuti (Song for Fela). And somehow, the singer/multi-instrumentalist ties it all together into a unified sound/approach - that is unmistakably Keller.

Blue Dogs were formed in Charleston, SC, in 1987 by lead singer/guitarist Bobby Houck and bassist Hank Futch, who had known each other since childhood and played together in college. Drummer Greg Walker came along later, joining the band in 1993. At first, the Blue Dogs were acoustic-oriented and played a lot of bluegrass and country covers. But in the early '90s, they went electric and shifted their focus to roots rock, country-rock, and Southern rock; the artists who have influenced the electric version of the Blue Dogs range from the Wallflowers and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers to Little Feat and John Cougar Mellencamp.


The Raleigh, North Carolina-based band, The Connells, play a guitar-oriented, power pop style of rock music, with introspective lyrics that reflect the American South. Guitarist Mike Connell formed the band in 1984, along with his brother David Connell on bass, Doug MacMillan on vocals, former Johnny Quest drummer Peele Wimberley on drums; and later added keyboardist Steve Potak to their lineup. From the beginning of the group, Mike Connell wrote both the music and the lyrics of the majority of the bands songs, although he was not the bands primary lead singer. Connells influences included the 1960s guitar pop of his childhood, including The Byrds and The Beatles; in an early interview, he stated that the first song he wrote as a teenager was titled Psychedelic Butterfly.

For more than 3 decades, "Doc" Watson has been America's most renowned & influential folk guitar stylist. Along w/renowned flatpicker Jack Lawrence, Doc's concerts are filled w/hot flatpicking tunes, slow ballads, gutsy blues numbers, delicately fingerpicked melodies, & an old time gospel song or two.
Jack Lawrence is heralded as one of the finest acoustic guitarists in the country. Referred to as an "acoustic powerhouse," his musicianship on the flat top guitar has mesmerized audiences for decades. Jack's style is eclectic, encompassing Americana, blues, bluegrass and "sophisticated folk." Jack is highly regarded in his most prominent role as partner to Doc Watson. The two musicians have traveled the country as a duo for the last two decades, delighting audiences from coast to coast.

Festival darlings the Carolina Chocolate Drops are coming into their own and fresh from a tour of Europe, we are pleased to have them return to Neighborhood Theatre.

Durham black string and folk resurrectionists the Carolina Chocolate Drops recently released their third studio album Genuine Negro Jig, their first with a major studio, and are enjoying more than a major regional following, but a burgeoning international following.

Carolina Chocolate Drops Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, is more revelation than revival. The old-time music that this trio of African-American musicians has been exploring for the last four yearswith banjo, fiddle, guitar, snare, kazoo, jugs, and bonesoffers pleasures both immediate and deep. Trouble In Your Mind and live-show favorite Cornbread and Butterbeans insist upon foot-tapping, if not a whirl around the closest dance floor, while others, like the brooding Kissin and Cussin and the more sensual Why Dont You Do Right?, invite comfortably seated rumination. But these generations-old songs, performed with both faithfulness and modernity, also represent a significant yet near-forgotten part of American musical history.

Eyes of the Elders, a local favorite hip-hop group, returns to Neighborhood Theatre!

Bonnie Prince Billy is clearly one of the great American songwriters to emerge in the last decade. Listen more closely, and you'll see.
Over the course of five albums and countless singles, compilation tracks, collaborations, live performances and material not intended for release, Bonnie Prince Billy has become a soughtafter commodity around the free world, as well as some of the uncharted, 'evil' parts of the planet.
The Bonnie Prince got his start as the featured singer with the Palace Music band. He struck out on his own in 1998. His first expression was a curious one: 'I Am Drinking Again.' When had we ever known him to drink before When had we even known him at all Here, Bonnys black humor first raised its hoary head, and belched a good one. This record set the tone for that first year: four singles on four different labels from three different countries (Domino, Lowfly, Allcity and Palace Records). This delivered the message that Bonny belonged to no one man but conversely, to the whole freaking world.

Truckstop Preachers deliver freight loads of raw honky tonk music to their audience. It's this respect that has attracted a congregation of real music listeners to the Truckstop Preachers. Loyal country music listeners are attracted to the truthful song writing. At the same time, fans of hard driving rock anticipate a gritty rock driven beat that brings them out of their seats.

The Preachers music defies any easy categorization. Each member of the Truckstop clergy bring their own background to form the sound heard from the stage. Nathan Palmer, lead vocalist, attests his rich baritone voice from the likes of Ernest Tubb and Johnny Cash, while his stage presence resembles that of Jim Morrison and Jeff Clayton (Antiseen). Lee Goodwin's heavy guitar riffs stem from legends Joe Perry, Red Simpson, and Don Rich. Mike Elder's ink covered arms bang out the beats of his punk and rock upbringing. Jeff Faulkner lays down the smooth walking lines that were inspired by classic country bass players of the past along with newer country inspired music, Whiskeytown and Wilco. Glenn Jones rounds out the combination with deep bluegrass roots along with traditional country interests that reach from New Grass Revival to Johnny Horton.

He has kept busy recording & playing w/ Bela Fleck, Emmylou Harris, Linda Rondstadt, Lyle Lovette & more. Though Bush is most often known as a mandolinist, he's also a champion fiddler and on two tracks he pays tribute to two violinists who helped push his fiddle playing into the rock arena when he was a youngster. On the rock classic "White Bird", Bush and Andrea Zonn update violinist David LaFlamme's enduring composition, both vocally and in a soaring violin arrangement that expands and improves on the original. Sam Bush's ability to be continually touched and amazed by new music may be the quality that makes him such a successful and virtuosic performer and band leader. He helped create newgrass music almost 35 years ago, but Laps in Seven is evidence that hes still as vital a presence on the acoustic music scene as ever: still making new sounds, still rockin out on great songs, and still pushing the bar higher for the legions of his protgs, fans and friends.

It began as a party, grew into a band, evolved into a sound, and emerged as an institution. Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band (aka the Booty Band) has gone through many changes since their fated onset in 2002. Today they are ready to shake the world, one cheek at a time.
The bands first official studio release, Now You Know, debuted in 2007 to critical acclaim. The Booty Band received Home Grown Music Networks Album of the Year and Band of the Year awards, as well as the #3 best regional album from WNCW, one of the top Triple A stations in the country. Awe-inspiring live shows, powerful original compositions, and crowd-pleasing presentations have helped the Booty Band build a solid nationwide fanbase. Having completed three national tours in 2010 alone, the band has worked hard and done well to keep this fanbase fired up and growing fast. Michelle Shocked is a traveller, a troubadour, a picker-poet, as they say in Texas. As a young feminist, she left Texas to travel, Kerouac-style, and was caught up in Reagan-era grassroots politics. Her musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording made around a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony walkman. Released in England as The Texas Campfire Tapes without Shockeds authority, its success abroad enticed Mercury Records to offer the newcomer a recording contract.

Evelyn (Lyn) Morgan - A celebration of her life - Neighborhood Theatre - 4pm

Evelyn (Lyn) Morgan, 54, a longtime resident of Charlotte, passed away on November 6, 2010, at home.
She was born on July 1, 1956, in Lynchburg, VA the daughter of James Pierpont Morgan and Anne Taylor-Dahm.
Lyn touched the hearts and lives of many; she was like a mother to some, a great mentor and confidante to many,
and wonderful friend to all. Lyn was an amazingly creative and artistic individual; her wit and laughter were intoxicating.
Her poise, beauty and creativity will be sorely missed.
Lyn is survived by her husband, Irwin Bostian, her mother and her brother David Taylor, both of Virginia Beach,
her brother, Ben Morgan and his family, of Raleigh, and many other relatives and friends that she considered family.
She is preceded in death by her father, her stepmother Betty Jean Morgan, and her brother, Michael Taylor.

A service celebrating her life will be held at Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E 36th Street, Charlotte on Sunday, November 14 at 4pm.

From busking in the streets of Nashville to headlining the historic Ryman Auditorium, Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) have come full circle playing their own brand of American roots music with a rock and roll attitude. The quintet met in New York state and hit the road, traveling city to city in a van and eventually settling for a year in North Carolina, where they ran into a bit of good fortune while playing in front of a local pharmacy to an impressed Doc Watson; the folk icon promptly scheduled the band to play at his MerleFest.

Soon after, OCMS relocated to Nashville and found themselves gracing the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, opening for Dolly Parton, touring with Merle Haggard and regularly appearing on NPRs A Prairie Home Companion. They caught the attention of Nettwerk Records in 2003 and signed on to release their debut album O.C.M.S, which they recorded at RCAs legendary Studio B and Woodland Sound Studio with producer/guitarist David Rawlings (Gillian Welch, Robyn Hitchcock) at the helm. O.C.M.S was released in 2004 to critical acclaim; the New Yorker said of the album, Heartbreaking, plunky ballads and unfastened fiddle tunes charged with youthful vigor, while the Village Voice predicted, Fame will soon lift her skirt for the band.

Donna the Buffalo's eclectic and often socially conscious music has it's base in traditional mountain music and is infused with elements of Cajun/ zydeco, rock, folk, reggae, and country. The groups core are vocalists Tara Nevins, who plays fiddle, guitar, accordion, and scrubboard, and guitarist Jeb Puryear. Keyboardist Dave McCracken, bassist Jay Sanders, and drummer Vic Stafford complete the ensemble.
