The Black Lips are a self-described "flower punk" band from Atlanta, GA. They are what you could call true visionaries of a skeptical age. Even from their very first 7" EP, you could tell they were doing their own thing on their own terms, and of course it didn't sit well, even with the dawning of the 21st century and all it promised. The fun these guys have is hard to hide either live or on record. Seriously slurred swashbucklers living out the ultimate teenage dream, yet breaking through another layer of remarkable idiocy, transcribed through hallucinations and exasperation.

An Horse is a two-person indie pop band from Brisbane, Australia, comprising Kate Cooper of Iron On on vocals and guitar and Damon Cox of Intercooler on drums. In 2008 they toured the United States as an opening act for Tegan and Sara, prior to the release of their first album. In August 2008, they opened for Death Cab for Cutie for their Australian tour.
"When singer-guitarist Kate Cooper one half of Aussie indie-pop duo An Horse tells her ex-love shes going to play it back in reverse, shes not kidding. With drummer Damon Cox, Cooper turns the bands debut into relationship post-mortem, rehashing a split over fuzzed-out riffs, hummable hooks and snarling beats. Postcards is a romantic nostalgia trip; Rearrange Beds pushes raggedy riffs against aches that sail like ships. The agonized detail recalls the best of Nineties alt-rock; as Cooper says, Like that good Hole album, I can live through this." ROLLING STONE Nicole Frehsee

Festival darlings the Carolina Chocolate Drops are coming into their own and fresh
from a tour of England, we are pleased to have them return to Neighborhood Theatre.
Durham black string and folk resurrectionists the Carolina Chocolate
Drops recently released their third studio album Genuine Negro Jig,
their first with a major studio, and are enjoying more than a major
regional following, but a burgeoning international following.
Carolina Chocolate Drops Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, is more revelation than revival. The old-time music that this trio of African-American musicians has been exploring for the last four yearswith banjo, fiddle, guitar, snare, kazoo, jugs, and bonesoffers pleasures both immediate and deep. Trouble In Your Mind and live-show favorite Cornbread and Butterbeans insist upon foot-tapping, if not a whirl around the closest dance floor, while others, like the brooding Kissin and Cussin and the more sensual Why Dont You Do Right?, invite comfortably seated rumination. But these generations-old songs, performed with both faithfulness and modernity, also represent a significant yet near-forgotten part of American musical history.
"The black string band and jug band traditions that were popular in the Carolinas in the 1920s and 1930s were probably doomed to oblivion until revivalists Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson met at a banjo convention in 2005. This album is produced by Joe Henry and blends traditional tunes, originals and old-time sounding covers of contemporary songs, including Blu Cantrells Hit Em Up Style. The urge to dance is almost irresistible." ~ Jerry Shriver, USA Today

Mike has long been a popular performer in Charlotte. Mike's one of folk music's most energetic performers - serving up a collection turbo-charged humorous songs & sensitive Ballads.
He is here again by popular demand. Mike began playing guitar his junior year in college during a snow storm & now, over 20 years later, he still plays guitar - and fiddle as well - traveling coast-to-coast delighting audiences with 12-string bottleneck blues, fiery Irish jigs and a wealth of his own music and stories filled with backwoods humor characteristic of a Mark Twain or Will Rogers.

Three extraordinary voices, two founding singer-songwriters, one singular vision: The Wailin' Jennys continue to evolve into far more than the melodious sum of their individual talents five years after blowing in on a fresh acoustic breeze from Canada's mid-western heartland. The Wailin Jennys have toured three continents, and are enjoying burgeoning international acclaim and a rapidly growing fan base. They continue to garner rave reviews for their album, Firecracker, which spent over 30 weeks in the Top 5 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart, and has charted in the Top 20 on Billboard's Top Heatseakers, Top Independent Albums and Top Internet Albums. Over the past two years, The Wailin Jennys have made many appearances on Garrison Keillers A Prairie Home Companion, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Bonnie Raitt and Meryl Streep.
Perhaps more beautiful than ever, The Wailin' Jennys are the darlings of the North American roots music arena. - The Toronto Star

Neighborhood Theatre favorite returns after touring most of the northeast & southeast, we are happy to them playing here at home and look forward to their high energy roots rock with a flare of folk-americana they do so well.
A new musical combo has been touring the east coast playing honest, folk-infused rock and roll. Known as The New Familiars, these four gentlemen combine an amazing passion for harmony and collaborative songwriting with multi-instrumental talent.
The band has constantly stretched the boundaries of 'genre labels' by playing their blend of folk-infused rock'n'roll. Since their debut in late 2006, they've built a sound based upon their balance of traditional and modern instruments which takes listeners from the back porches of appalachia to the floors of underground rock clubs.

There's a new breed of dark, raw, mind-blowing psych-rock crawling from the South, and its name is Dead Confederate. The Georgia group conjured the haunting sound of their debut full-length album WRECKING BALL the old-fashioned way: by making it in the tiny concrete box of a studio in Austin, Texas, where the sound effects for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were recorded. "We're kind of like a Jackson Pollock painting," explains singer/guitarist Hardy Morris, 28. "Brutally honest. There isn't some big twist or turn, it just lays it all out there. Immediate, no frills, primal, emotional.

There are certain things in life that we never stop trying to figure out. The big things, the important things: love, pain, spirituality, a bit more love, a bit more pain. You get the idea. They're the issues that inspire endless works of philosophy, art, and poetry. They're the questions that inevitably lead to more questions. The Big Ones. But sometimes someone can take these issues and remind us of their most important aspect: what we actually do understand. Nashville based singer/songwriter Dave Barnes is one of these people. His songs often manage to do something even more difficult than critical analysis. They celebrate what we can grasp. Like much of the soul and R&B that influenced him during his southern childhood, Barnes' music connects with the listener both viscerally and emotionally in such a manner that we too immediately understand where he's coming from.

From busking in the streets of Nashville to headlining the historic Ryman Auditorium, Old Crow Medicine Show (OCMS) have come full circle playing their own brand of American roots music with a rock and roll attitude. The quintet met in New York state and hit the road, traveling city to city in a van and eventually settling for a year in North Carolina, where they ran into a bit of good fortune while playing in front of a local pharmacy to an impressed Doc Watson; the folk icon promptly scheduled the band to play at his MerleFest.
Soon after, OCMS relocated to Nashville and found themselves gracing the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, opening for Dolly Parton, touring with Merle Haggard and regularly appearing on NPRs A Prairie Home Companion. They caught the attention of Nettwerk Records in 2003 and signed on to release their debut album O.C.M.S, which they recorded at RCAs legendary Studio B and Woodland Sound Studio with producer/guitarist David Rawlings (Gillian Welch, Robyn Hitchcock) at the helm. O.C.M.S was released in 2004 to critical acclaim; the New Yorker said of the album, Heartbreaking, plunky ballads and unfastened fiddle tunes charged with youthful vigor, while the Village Voice predicted, Fame will soon lift her skirt for the band.
